I have always given Hawthorne a pass for saying Jack Hunt. The play was so unbelievable that he lost his mind for a second.

I've read, or seen it discussed here in the past, that his spotter is actually the one who thought he saw #8 instead of #9 and the spotter pointed to Hunt on the spotter chart for Hawthorne to see.
