I am having similar WTF thoughts about our defense. It appears Moo State sucks balls. How did we let that happen?

We'll probably be grafted into the history books again as being a part of the answer to this Aflac Trivia Question:

"What QB set an SEC record in single-game passing yards, yet was benched only 3 games later for a non-injury reason?"

"That's right Tim, he had that big game against LSU's defense, and then just sucked at his job until it was taken away from him in the middle of the aTm game that season. 2020 was just a strange year."

It's a combination of things.
The defense isn't that talented

You have andre anthony starting at end.
Todd Harris and Hampton are basically starters.
Jay ward is your 4th corner.
Damone Clark is your "Devin white"
Ricks is a stud but he shouldn't have to start.
That 2018 recruiting class hurt

Jimbo's contract really worried me about Woody. I loved everything else about him, but how do you allow that much to be guaranteed? Sure, he gets the contract done, but not a great track record at negotiating. Pelini's contract continues the trend. It's human nature to stay focused when you have a big financial incentive. Pride alone as a motivator is not as reliable for many people.

Teams get up playing the defending champion

No excuses. This is a terrible MSU team with a single sec win this year. Historically bad defenses are what make losses like that possible. Not shitty teams getting up to play the defending champ.

Exactly, I am watching Bama run the same defense we run and for the most part they have been stuffing UGA. Mostly it is personnel.

I hear what you’re trying to get across but does that mean Missouri had their best game too and were hyped to play the reigning National Champion even though we’d let Miss. State run up over 600 yards and beat us?
I understand wanting to back our team but at some point we have to admit that in 2 out of 3 games so far, the defense was worse than most high school defenses and we have to also remember that Coach O is still a defensive position coach too, so he should know first hand what the defenses problems are. I haven’t watched a team in the top 25 these past two weeks that I thought we could say our defense could hold them enough for us to comfortably win.

Honestly I don’t trust O to make the right hire. He hasn’t done what he said he’d do with coordinators at all. He hired Canada. Huge mess. He replaced him with Ensminger. (Cause there was nobody under 100 years old that could run a modern offense apparently) Ensminger suggested Brady as an assistant to rebuild the archaic offense. Now we got Steve again...ok. Then O hires Bo. Another mess. Who’s the stud coordinators we were going to hire? Elite. Best out there. They’re not wearing purple and gold.

He won’t be fired right now.

He shouldn’t be fired right now.

Stop starting this thread over and over.

Ummm, Bama is winning and pulling away. From a top 5 team. We aren’t.

you people said all the same stuff after we lost to Troy. We weren't going to crash and burn then and we aren't going to crash and burn now. We'll win some we shouldn't.

Well, I'll say this and that is if he or his defense rather gets burned again by South Carolina. Then he should just go on ahead and do the right, acceptable thing and that is to resign.

Unless Bo is sitting in on Zoom coaching meetings from David Reeves, Barry Odom, Bob Shoop, Mike Elko, Jon Heacock, Jim Leonhard or any other qualified defensive coordinator that has a more modern scheme than 15 years ago, nothing is going to change.

frick age. Hire a great coach, regardless of age. Venables isn’t young. Odom isn’t young. Hugh Freeze isn’t young. Art Briles wasn’t young when he was a Baylor, but he was sure as hell innovative and taught a couple of the guys posters on this board are drooling all over.

Just hire a great coach next time.

Even Nick Saban as DC couldn’t ressurrect our defense after 2022 if it’s allowed to go that long with Pelini.

We haven’t played a top 5 team yet. Our offense isn’t as good yet, doesn’t mean anything for the defense

If you want to bash O over promoting Ensminger and hiring Bo, be my guest. But Canada was a hell of a lot different situation. It obviously didn’t work out, but O went out and got the Broyles award winner. He was one of the hottest OCs on the market, and he ran a unique scheme that seemed tailor made for our personnel at the time. I don’t fault O for that one.

Maybe you fault him for not trying harder to work it out, but that’s a two way street. Canada was pretty obviously a major a-hole. Also, his buyout wasn’t as bad because he went straight to another job, so it didn’t hurt us as bad as this one could. There won’t be any jobs waiting on Bo.
