With the emergence of Kaleb Jackson today (shining on the second team), we really seemed stacked at RB. Noah Cain seemed to take most of the first team reps today, but we still have experienced starters in Josh Williams and Logan Diggs (not practicing cuz knicked up) with John Emery, Tre Bradford, Armoni Goodwin, and freshman Trey Holly all still available as depth. Who do y'all have as the first back up? Any surprise risers on the depth chart? Will certain backs be used for certain situations? Either way, have to feel good about the competition in the backfield!!

For me, having seen Diggs play at ND a lot (ND grad) I can see him being in the top two backs. He has no quit in him. Williams and Cain are also good and vet backs but it will be interesting to see if they can keep Jackson off of the field.

Also I hate reading that Emery is running with the 3s today. I know he just recently rejoined the team from more academic troubles but man, thought he might be able to put the game together as a senior...

I wouldn’t say we are stacked at RB, rather deep. On Off the Bench they made a good point of usually having a rotation of 3-4 running backs isn’t really a good thing. That likely means you don’t really have a complete every down back, instead you have a bunch of solid backs that do different things well.

Cain will start the first series.
Williams would be No. 2, but seems to have been MIA for the spring and a not insignificant portion of camp so far.

If Williams is limited, Emery is no.2. After that, it’s really anyone’s guess

That has zero to do with emery. He’s been here and done this for 5 seasons. This was to get the young RB’s some reps.

Initially experience will put the older backs on the field because generally speaking they have more poise, their knowledge of the game is better and they pass protect better.

It might very situational, it might depend on the front 7 we're playing, it might just be by feel or practice leading up to gameday.1-8 are interchangeable really, if we face a team that can't stop the run, I feel sorry for them.

Yall are reading way too much into the RB rotation day to day. The most experienced/healthy guys (Diggs, Emery, and Cain) will play the most Week 1.

You think Emery and cain get more reps than Williams? Williams finished the season as our lead back pretty much

Kaleb Jackson listened to Nick Saban: he's forcing the coaches to play him.

Replace Emery with Williams.

Diggs is a transfer not grad transfer. I think it’s Josh and diggs getting most of the looks early

J Williams is the most complete proven back. Jackson has the most talent. Diggs and Cain are consistent. No fumbles. Make the blocks. Tough. Not going to run away from anyone. That’s your rotation until Jackson breaks out.

Emery is not playing the first three games. He didn’t get a rep in the scrimmage. TIFWIW

I don't think either of those statements are true. 1. He isnt built to be an every down back. 2. Williams has the 4th most career rushing yards on his own team. The obviously love his consistency but he isn't any more proven then the other returning guys + Diggs
