Paul Mainieri does not rule out an Eric Walker return, but says 'I'm not counting on it.'

As his teammates loaded onto a bus bound for the airport, sophomore pitcher Eric Walker walked into Alex Box Stadium looking to get some work done.

He said his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery last summer was progressing well, and then he dropped some interesting information: He is already throwing 87 mph, roughly his top speed from a year ago.

Which begs the question: Could Walker return to pitch this season?

Don’t bet on it, LSU coach Paul Mainieri said — but if he is deemed good to go, the Tigers won't hold him out.

“If (the athletic training staff) were to tell me it’s OK, that means they’re saying you’re not going to do anything to hurt him,” Mainieri said. “I’d love to have him available, but I’m not counting on it. I’ve been told pretty sternly not to count on it.”

Sounds like you shouldn't count on Walker pitching this year.

I'm not. I'm just surprised Walker is throwing 87 mph already.

Wonder how his control is on that 87 mph heater? He had such great control last year. He would hit his spots, finding the holes in the Batter's swing more times than not. He is every coaches dream pitcher, consistently missing the barrel of the bat.
Would be awesome to see him, Hilliard, & Labas next year.

It's unreal how far we have come in treating these ball players.

I'm glad to hear hear that Walker is well on his way to a full recovery.

Amazing

At this point, roll with what you have.
In Gilbert, Hess, Hilliard and Labas you have enough if you should fall into losers bracket of regional play.

Walker could be a potential Fri night guy next year and along with Hilliard and Labas give you a pretty good SEC rotation next year.

Have you seen a freeze frame picture or a slow motion video of a pitcher's arm as he throws a breaking ball? The amount of torque on an elbow is amazing. I am surprised that some pitchers have long careers without any arm issues.

Unless he's absolutely 100%, there's no reason to put him out there. We have enough arms this year and it'd be a disaster to mess up his return next year.

That said, getting him back for a potential post season run would be huge.

If we stay healthy, our pitching will be filthy next year.

Hilliard, Walker, Labas, Storz. Someone will have to make room in the weekend rotation.

Good position to be in.
