2015 was the worst season, defensively, under Les Miles' tenure at LSU. Why Kevin Steele? Why??

Year Opp PPG Opp YPG DC
2015 24 342.5 Steele
2014 17.5 316.8 Chavis
2013 22 340.7 Chavis
2012 17.5 307.6 Chavis
2011 11.3 261.5 Chavis
2010 18.2 307.2 Chavis
2009 16.2 327.6 Chavis
2008 24.2 325.5 Mallory/SBD
2007 19.9 288.8 Pelini
2006 12.6 242.8 Pelini
2005 14.2 266.8 Pelini

Lack of depth and youth IMO. They generally played well in first half of games.

I thought the single biggest problem was poor tackling.

Even stars like Adams seem to regress when it comes to tackling.

My point is - Why hire Kevin Steele?????? If you meet with 20+ DCs, Kevin Steele is not going to be at the top of that group. Bottom line.

we were worse the first half of last year and only marginally worse than 2013.

Chavis won with Peveto's players.

I still believe we need to hold judgement on Steele til after next year. He will have quality depth at d-line and a deep experienced secondary. Even if Beckwith leaves and LB is weak those other two could make up for that.

Adams is great at GETTING TO tackles, but you're right, I have noticed he doesn't like to wrap up. He's the last man though. He's the third layer.

I think it's obvious what the in-game issue was - busted coverage. EVERY team we played this year blew our coverage at some point in the game for a big play. This is on Kevin Steele! And it wasn't our guys being out ran, it was simple miscues on zone transitions, knowing which receiver to pick up, etc. That is 100% on Kevin Steele.

Steele deserves another year. I didn't expect the D to be very good this year considering a new scheme and how thin the DL is. The offense and special teams didn't help the defense this year either.

Actually I think heading into November we had given up the fewest big plays (20+ yards is the accepted metric of a "big play") in all of FBS

These types of errors are always expected when a new coordinator implements a new system.

Give Steele the Mettenberger/OBJ/JLandry led offense along with LF7 and LSU is easily in the Sugar Bowl at minimum, IMO. Chavis defense couldn't even hold the rope doing that 2013 season.

That could very well be true. But our blown coverages went for 6 points(which makes it a lot worse than allowing a 20+ yard gain here and there). If someone has time, I'd like to see if they can add up our points allowed this season solely from blown coverages.

OK. Now, post what the overall numbers are for college football over the last several years... I know this is yet another troll job, but I honestly think you aren't smart enough to figure out why this trend in college football. I'll give you a hint....hurry up...more plays...also,the special teams literally accounted for about 4 to 5 points per game. To top it off....chavis left LSU with terrible depth.

But hey...those facts don't support your agenda so I can see where you wouldn't want to mention them.

With Texas Tech's stellar pass game, I wouldn't be surprised if they beat us on blown coverages.

When the offense gets consecutive 3 and outs every game there is only so much you can do defensively.

Missing the McNeese St game, which could have influenced the AVG YPG either way.

Also, YPG is not the only marker of a good defense or the results of a season.

I'm not going to judge KS on a single season of youth and trying to make a system work with the skill set and player size inherited, but I get it....you found the stat that fits your argument.

For yards...overall the number of plays in college football ran in a game has gone up....for points....the bdp special teams had a major impact on this.

Combined with a very thin DL depth....and these numbers aren't surprising. Also...LSU STILL stacked up pretty good nationally and in the sec..

Exactly blanky, the offense this year had trouble getting out of it's own way. Especially the last 4 games. So the defense with a lack of depth was on the field entirely too long.
