1/9/2012 and the ensuing 2012 Bama matchup are my top 2.

2012 Alabama. I don’t think I’ve ever been as sick after a loss as I was for that one

I wasn’t sick at all. I big time disappointed but the team left everything they had on the field. Just one bad call by a ref and a perfect call by Bama against the defense at the perfect time for them was the difference. Again disappointed but I walked out of there that night damn proud of the team.

both 2012 games against Bama. First would've gotten us a nati, 2nd would've gotten us to SEC championship to face UGA which would've been tough but could've done.

bullshite!

Les pussed out when the victory was there for the taking. One first down ends the game with Alabama never getting the ball back. Mettenberger was unstoppable in the second half. Hell, just before Les decided to play for a FG that STILL left it a one score game, Mettenberger had connected with OBJ for 22 yards down to the Alabama 30.

10 more yards and the entire trajectory of that season, and maybe the two programs changes. While nothing is certain, its very likely LSU wins the NC if they win that game. Instead, Les took the ball out of his QBs hands and HOPED his defense could hold. The same guy who gained a reputation for throwing caution to the wind and coming up with huge plays on risky calls shrugged to Saban.

The team and crowd were electric in the second half...the HC let them all down. When you have a chance to step on an opponent's throat in an advantageous situation you do it!

Last year Kelly didn't do it when he decided to kick the XP vs. FSU rather than ride a hot QB with a 2 point conversion. He did the exact opposite vs. Alabama. If I have the ball with a chance to win and make sure the opponent never gets it again I'm taking it

Yeah outside of 2012 NC game against Alabama, 2006 Auburn always sticks out to me.

Absolutely and it is NOT even close. That game put two programs on different trajectories. 2019 greatly helped correct that course & now since 2022 in CBK we trust.

Disagree that 1/9/12 was the game that put us on different trajectories. Had we finished the game at home vs Alabama in 2012, we regain the upper hand in the rivalry, and 1/9/12 can be seen as an anomaly. Home vs Alabama 2012 is the date that Les' LSU career died.

The game you want back is one you never even played in.
Oklahoma State v Iowa State Nov of 2011.
OSU wins we play them not Bama.

I am still not convinced that FG was wide. It looked like it went directly above the bar.

And after OBJ caught that pass for a first down at about the bama 28, what did Les do? Went fricking BACKWARDS.
Instead of keeping the momentum and throwing a screen or a TE crossover or a slant to Landry, he had Mett pitch the ball like 6 yards behind the line and it is stuffed for a huge loss.
The play call right there cost us the game. He didn't use the clock well at all either.
He might have been better off coffin-corner punting inside the 5 yard line than missing a FG and giving them the ball at the 30. Because even if he makes the FG, Bama would still only needed a TD and they could have started from the 25.
Now to be fair, before that final drive, Alabama had exactly FIVE YARDS TOTAL OFFENSE in the second half. If we keep them backed up inside their 5, I think we win.

Florida State this season as all the talk about national championship will certainly impact this opening game. Florida State game being taken for granted.

Boom. I was 11 or 12 and at TS. I think that was the first time watching "my" team lose affected me so deeply. And it still kinda bugs me that LSU lost that game.

Close second would be LSU-Bama 2012

I was at that game in 1979. the refs were Pac 10 and the call against Benji was BS. It was on third down and kept their final drive alive. truly heartbreaking. RE: Bama 1/9/12, it was heartbreaking that OK State lost because people in the know knew we could not beat Bama again and we deserved to be national champs that year.

Agree and upvoted your call on this. And there is another one that comes at least into the same realm as 1/9/2012: 11/1/1969 - a 26-23 loss to Ole Miss. Our only loss that year and cost us a shot at the Natty.
