LSUWIRE - Where does Brian Kelly rank among college football coaches after Nick Saban’s retirement.

Nick Saban is out of college football, and the massive shadow he has cast over the sport for more than two decades leaves with him.

With Saban — perhaps the greatest coach the sport has ever seen — gone, how do the remaining head coaches stack up against each other? On3’s Jesse Simonton tried his hand at answering that exact question.

He unsurprisingly put Georgia’s Kirby Smart at the top of his rankings, but in the No. 2 spot, he went with an option that may surprise some people: LSU’s Brian Kelly.

An SEC West Title in year one; developed a Heisman quarterback and broke offensive records in year two. And year three for Brian Kelly appears even more promising.

Hell yeah! I have him as #1 on my list amongst other active coaches. Glad he is with the Tigers!

I said Brian Kelly was a top 2-5 coach in the country and got laughed at on the SEC rant. There’s only 1 coach you can definitively say is better than him and that’s Kirby. Dabo has accomplished more, but I’d take Kelly all day over Dabo.

He’s a top 5 active coach but in no way should he be ranked ahead of Kirby or Dabo.

Yeah the only reason why you would put him ahead of Dabo is because of Dabo’s hesitation to use the transfer portal and NIL

Fine with him being over dabo since dabo is les miles of the acc.

Kirby should be 1 as he has the titles and isn’t a les miles type

He has more wins than Dabo. That's a reason you can put him ahead of Dabo. Didn't ND win the ACC in 2020 also?

Idk. Something of Dabo dilemma here. His star his certainly dimmed but he's coached 4 nattys and won 2 of them. That carries considerable weight to me.

I mean if Kirby called it quits today, would I say Dabo was the best coach in college football? At this point in 2024, I don't think so. I'm also not sure in a World without Kirby if I'd call BK the best coach in college football. But I don't know who would be

Dabo clearly has the better resume, but if the ranking is about who I’d want going forward, I’d put Kelly ahead of him. Sark, Day, and probably Deboer are right up there as well.

Jesse Simonton is good. He does the Andy Staples podcast with Andy.

He knows his stuff.

The Rant has crapped on the truth often but that’s considered normal behavior here.

You are on target. The reason Dabo is dropping is because he hardly ever takes a transfer. What's next for Dabo...taking a stagecoach to his next away game. He is falling behind the times and it is starting to show in his record. Every other team essentially is trying to fill holes with the portal. He doesn't even try.

pump the brakes. I think we could see a bridge year toward the defense getting where we need it to be, but I expect more defensive growing pains in 2024. Just don't have all the puzzle pieces quite yet to be better than average in the SEC. 2025 is where I'm expecting the exponential rise to really get going.

That's a dumb reason to do it. You are basically saying he is a better coach strictly because he is older and has coached longer. Dabo has a better win percentage and has won multiple Division 1 championships.

Also you might want to revisit that ACC Championship game before you use it as a reason that BK is better than Dabo…

I'll be the first to admit this, and I even posted it once somewhere else. I was thrilled to get Kelly as the coach here.....my only concern was IT APPEARED initially that NIL and $$ was going to potentially hamper what I thought was a great hire who is organized, motivated, has a vision, tAlignment etc.....but man, he saw where recruiting was lacking and went out got the right pieces. I think starting in 2025 LSU will be the team to beat because of Kelly.

Dabo has won more than Les ever did. It’s ok to admit that.
