On this date in 2000 Rohan Davey hit Robert Royal for a TD on the first play of OT vs Tenn

Really a wild game. This was the week after the UAB loss and for a variety of reasons Josh Booty didn't start at QB the next week. Tennessee was #11 and less than two years removed from a national title. LSU led 24-6 at halftime and 31-15 in the 4th. To Tennessee's credit they scored two tds and made two two point conversions to send it to the first OT at Tiger Stadium, only LSU's second, the first two years earlier in a loss at Ole Miss.

Surreal memory for those of us that were students at the time

That was an interesting season.
In game 2 LSU nearly blew a 21 point 4th quarter lead to Houston. They then lost @ Auburn before losing to UAB. LSU fans weren't exactly high on Saban at that moment, and few thought they would be Tenn.
LSU got housed the next week @ Florida (like they always did in those days), but then went on a 4 game SEC winning streak. The most fun game was the home OT win over Miss. State that kicked off at 8:00 pm. They then beat Alabama at home for the first time in 34 years...complete with students running on the field and mooning the Alabama bench and the use of "instant replay" when instant replay wasn't actually allowed in college football.

The boos after the Ole Miss game in 01 were as loud as anything that Miles or O or Kelly ever got.
He was 12-7 since getting to BR and was all but eliminated from the West race after that loss before complete meltdowns by Auburn, Arkansas, and good Ole Miss kept us alive.
Had that Auburn game not been moved to December post 9/11 we don’t get the SEC and Sugar Bowl wins and Saban would have legitimately been in trouble when 02 fell apart because he left Mauck in late during a blowout in The Swamp (I was there too
) Never know how or why things work out the way they do

The Knoxville sportswriter (John Adams?) wrote an article the week of game stating that the mystique and legend of Tiger Stadium was a myth!
Tiger Stadium was no myth that night! The Tigers opened up a can on the Vols in the first half. Toefield’s 70 yard TD run sent the stadium into a frenzy. The Vols came back to tie it.
Prior to OT, Davey made an incredible play to get us out of a deep hole that could have set up Tenn with a FG to win it.
It was a great night to be in the Stadium.

It was. And this was a huge game really convincing LSU fans Saban could win here (Saban was certainly an upgrade over DiNardo but no one --even him had a clue how well he'd do) and really convinced Saban HE could win here.
Weird how the night in 1998 Tennessee beat Florida in OT to get the monkey off their back and eventually win the NC, LSU was ranked higher than the Vols. And then LSU fell apart and 1999 was just a disaster. Fear of returning to a 1989-1994 period wasn't that crazy especially after the UAB game.

I mentioned on the Scoreboard that Leavitt limping around reminded me of Davey from this game. You can see Davey limping around for a lot of this game too, notably after throwing that OT TD but he did for most of the 2nd half too.

I still have the pylon from the back corner of the endzone in my office. That was the 1st game I went to as student and got there early to sit in the first few rows.

I came off the field with a 2’x2’ square of the eye of the tiger. I was hanging out samples on my way back to the car lol
