Chizik > Richard. We need someone with experience as a college DC. Recruiting abilities and the proven factor favors Chizik.

Todd Grantham makes the most sense to me.
He'd be making an upward move and he's familiar with the SEC. He might have a bit of a chip on his shoulder too.
Some of the other mentions are not remotely possible since they'd be making lateral moves to come here and would likely have to pay a big exit fee.
I don't see that happening.

Dale, I agree with you on Grantham as a strong candidate but he would be making a lateral move as well. IMO, given our financials and stature as a program, the only coordinator who would refuse us by reason of a "lateral move" is Brent Venables. Leonhard might refuse because of his history with Wisconsin, but not because of the notion of a lateral move.

Didn’t Steele leave and get back to the state of Alabama for some kind of retirement BS, kinda of foggy but I remember something like that

Yeah, I guess it would be considered lateral for Grantham.
Another name that I think is definitely an upward move is Bob Shoop from MS state.

IMO you need several years in the NFL to get your guys and establish a really good to great defense. So I don’t think we should judge K. Richard on his Dallas stint. I don’t disagree with your choices either though.

I HATE the Cowboys, but I would be a fan of the Richard hire! Like his name too. Although I doubt he pronounces it like mine LOL. All jokes aside, he seems like a very solid hire to say the least.

the following were finalists for the Broyles award this past year on defense;
Jeff Hafley, Ohio State co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach
Dan Lanning, Georgia defensive coordinator
Morgan Scalley, Utah defensive coordinator/safeties coach
Phil Snow, Baylor defensive coordinator
With the exception of Dan Lanning, All would be making upward moves to come here and all four are well respected. It should be noted that Aranda was at Utah at one time. Note Phil Snow at Baylor. Not sure Aranda will want to keep him around.
and just fwiw
here are Aranda's number while at LSU
Total Defense Pass defense rush defense
2016 -5th 14th 10th
2017-12th 21st 24th
2018 -30th 44th 38th
2019 -32nd 57th 24th
are we really losing anything here?

I’m pretty sure Snow is going to Carolina with Rhule
Aranda was also at Utah State, not Utah

And for those in panic mode, just stop! Ohio State doesn't NOT have a DC either.
We will get a solid coach and hopefully we can develop some linebackers Our secondary will be ELITE next year!!!

I would still go hard at the guys, save Venables.
Force them to at least double their salaries.
Wiscy DC makes sense, because I still feel like LSU gives you far more exposure to become a HC or move on to the NFL. I realize he's a Wiscy guy, but I'd still make the offer. They never thought Arana would leave.
I just really prefer a current elite guy if possible and I would at least make the runs through them all before settling on a guy who is out of work or making a step up.

It's only lateral if the pay is the same.

I agree. Aranda's defenses have been really average outside of his first year. Below are rankings in the following categories:
Points Per Play
Yards Per Play
Yards Per Rush
Yards Per Pash
Takeaways
Sack Percentage
2016 - 4, 5, 8, 17, 77, 9
2017 - 26, 26, 40, 24, 82, 12
2018 - 34, 24, 51, 8, 23, 61
2019 - 27, 29, 35, 20, 42, 30

I’ve considered his credentials and the arguments both ways, but I am not going to be able to approve this hire.
