I dont want to take anything away from Kevin Faulk. he is clearly one of the best LSU players ever.
But did he really turn the tide for LSU recruiting?
We still missed out on guys like Reggie Wayne, Ed Reed, Travis Minor
we didn’t really lock down the state until Saban got here.

he started the reversal.
and you started noticing that reversal before Saban got here.
Saban finished the job by locking down the rest.

Ed Reed was not highly recruited out of High School. Most of his offers were from smaller schools. Miami was on probation at the time, so they weren't killing it with a bunch of big name guys.
Travis Minor was because he was coming out when LSU had Kevin Faulk and Cecil Collins (another Louisiana guy) before anyone knew he was a creep.
oh and Kevin Faulk still holds the SEC record for All-Purpose yards.
He was #2 all-time in rushing in the SEC when he graduated (still top 5)
and he still in the top 3 in SEC history in Touchdowns.

Many teams have ring of honor or something similar. It doesn't retire their number, but honors the greatness of the player.
Faulk has been the most significant LSU player since Billy Cannon. The success we have been witnessing for many years is due in large part to Faulk coming here and becoming one of our all time best players

Ok, but LSU doesn’t?
We have an LSU HOF & retired jerseys

damn it’s amazing they turned all those small name guys into like 9 first rounders in 2000 and 2001.

which is why I would retire his number.
I just think there is not much more than feelings to support the idea that he was the turning point in LSU football history.
We’ve seen plenty of teams get the hometown recruit to stay for it to mean nothing in the long run even if they have an amazing career.

We had 3 winning seasons in the 90s - 95,96,97. The "Bringing Back the Magic" years. Faulk was a big reason why. Along with his stats in both LSU and SEC history plus his all american selections.
That isn't just feelings.

and then we went 4-7 his senior year and 3-8 when he left.
and like i said, He was an awesome player, While he was here he made a huge difference. He deserves to be honored. He is one of the greatest players in LSU history.
The only thing i’m questioning is his long term impact.

They were still getting some big name guys, just not in the number they did right after (the bulk of that 2001 team were signed right after probation ended). Ed Reed would have been probably the last probation class.
The current Star system didn't really exist back then, but Reed called himself a 2-star coming out.

obviously you have to capitalize on the momentum, but there was a definite noticeable momentum when it was happening.
suddenly (even before Saban) guys we were used to seeing sign elsewhere were signing to stay home.
and Faulk was the first one of those types of guys that stayed home.
then as more stayed (and then Saban came in) it snowballed into what became the Golden Age of LSU football.

because he started the trend.
each year after we saw more and more home talent STAY home.
yeah DiNardo lost it as far as winning goes, but he was still landing Louisiana kids at a higher clip than predecessors.
Then Nick came and kept even more of them home.
but if you drew out a line graph of LSU keeping biggest Louisiana names, the upward trajectory started with Kevin Faulk.

Who are we talking about though? because it doesn’t show up on the draft. it doesn’t show up in all american lists. it doesn’t show up on all conference teams.
We had a 1st rounder in Kevin Faulks class and the 2 classes before. 2/3 were from louisiana and 1 was born here.

1996 Faulk and Lafleur were the first LSU All Americans in football in 7 seasons.
We've only had 4 years with 0 LSU selections since (that's almost 30 years). 1999, 2000, 2021, 2022. And every year had at least 1 Louisiana-born All American except 2009 (Peterson).
I thought you were older, Sammy. You don't remember Hallman? You don't remember "Bring Back the Magic(tm)"? Dinardo's first official act as LSU's head coach was to reach out to Kevin Faulk and tell him he was going to build the offense around him. Because Faulk was headed to the Sunshine State if Curley would have remained coach.

He stayed when lots of top players were going elsewhere. And he started something that got other great instate players to stay when it was normal to go another school just to chase a national title.

1st off as i said it didn’t immediately spike up. It started tending up.
as it trended and we started winning, it trended more.
2nd guys like Cecil Collins came in after Faulk. never made it as an All American because of other issues. But he’s one of the big names that stayed home.
3rd, go look at some of the names in recruiting classes from ‘96-‘99.
Big time contributors for LSU from Louisiana
Collins
Cedric Donaldson
Mark Roman
Brandon Winey
Jarvis Green
Ryan Clark
Fred Booker
Robert Royal
Josh Reed
Chad Lavalais (didn’t qualify until Saban, but originally signed with Dinardo)
Bradie James
Trev Faulk
Domanick Davis
LaBrandon Toefield
all of those are Louisiana guys that contributed to the rise of LSU.
and all of them were the exact type of players we kept losing to schools all over the country.
most (all?) at least got a sniff in the NFL.
not saying we wouldn’t have gotten any of them without Faulk paving the way.
But pre-Faulk there’s probably quite a few on this list that go elsewhere.
Post-Faulk we landed all of these plus probably a few i’m missing.
and it steadily climbed from 1995-Saban. Then Saban took it to the next level.
And now here we are.

Of course Faulk will be honored, but there are superstars from the 70s and 80s (Bert Jones, Charles Alexander, Hilliard) who should be addressed first. Those guys aren't getting any younger.
