I think the issue with Underwood, in addition to the obvious issue of not having him on the team, is that his long time commitment meant we didn't recruit any other QBs and flipping a couple of weeks before signing day fricked LSU pretty good.

When Dakorian Moore was originally committed to LSU I checked out his highlights and noticed the QB that was throwing to him. It was Keelon Russell that signed with Alabama yesterday. At the time we had Bryce Underwood locked in. After watching Kellon Russell's film I told my son at the time, are we sure we really want Underwood? Keelon was uncommitted at the time. Unfortunately Alabama can make a good argument they may have signed the best QB in the class. Keelon Russell is very impressive and will be trouble when LSU faces Alabama. Keelon Russell is WAY better than Milroe.

Exactly. Bryce flipping at the last second really hurt LSU at the QB position. If Bryce commits early to Michigan I think LSU goes all out for Keelon Russell but it was way too late by the time Bryce flipped on LSU.

Underwood and it’s not close.

It is funny when I see a poster make statements that are unknown, as if they are facts.

He may turn out to be a superstar. He may like that guaranteed money and get lazy, or he may just not have it at the next level. Chances are high that he will be really good, but, having never played a down in college football yet, there is a chance he will be just average or worse.

Maybe...again, we don't know that yet, and neither do you. Things are changing in College very quickly now. He could not progress, or he could, same with Bryce. I do know it is easy to let sudden money change your drive and work ethic.

You can say that about literally any recruit in the country, at any position.

By that logic why even talk about recruiting at all?

of course you can...which is why there are no guarantees. We don't know who hurts the most yet, so, it isn't realistic to say that losing underwood was the worst, and not close. We will know if a year or two.

Only 2 won a national championship? I’d argue at least half were “busts”

I mean, if your bar for “hitting” on a top QB recruit is to have a career like Bryce Young or Trevor Lawrence then OK I guess. But that’s silly.

4 of those guys (Sayin, Manning, Klubnik, and Ewers) are still playing college ball. Sayin is a true freshman behind an established starter. Manning looked pretty damn good when Ewers were hurt. Ewers will be in his second CFP this year. And Klubnik, while not exactly elite, has been a solid P4 starter.

Of the other 6 guys, all but 1 (Patterson) made active NFL rosters. 3 were 1st round picks. The ones that weren’t 1st round picks played for Stanford and South Carolina.

The reality is that most P4 QB recruits will never even become full-time starters at the P4 level, much less go to the NFL.

Do we just love misery on this board? Celebrate those who chose to be Tigers.

So your point is, indeed, that there’s no point in talking about recruits? OK.

I assumed it was understood that OP was asking which one hurt the most right now, with the information we have available on 12/5/2024.

MISS:

Davis Mills
Shea Patterson
Josh Rosen
Cade Klubnik

MEH:
Quinn Ewers
Spencer Rattler

PLAYED LIKE #1 QB:

Bryce Young
Trevor Lawrence

Jury is still out on Sayin and Arch, though Arch looks legit at this point

Those are the last 10 #1 quarterbacks in the 247 composite. How many can you really say were misses?

quote:

Julian Sayin - too early to tell
Arch Manning - too early to tell, looks good
Cade Klubnik - looks decent enough
Quinn Ewers - looks decent enough, need to point out he's a transfer
Bryce Young - he was good, a slight knock for being in the machine that is Alabama
Spencer Rattler - he was fine
Trevor Lawrence - good player, didn't live up to the hype but the hype was really large
Davis Mills - who?
Shea Patterson - we all know the answer to this
Josh Rosen - don't think you could say he lived up to "can't miss" status

Julian Sayin - too early
Arch Manning - too early but looks promising
Cade Klubnik - rough early on, appears to be coming around
Quinn Ewers - 3 year starter in a 2x playoff team
Bryce Young - #1 overall pick
Spencer Rattler - I guess technically a bust, but he was pretty damn good in college
Trevor Lawrence - #1 overall pick
Davis Mills - Bust
Shea Patterson - Bust
Josh Rosen - First Round pick

It’s almost like the recruiting services are getting better.

Stewart. #1 player in the state at a position of huge need. Gotta keep that kid home. LSU needs the big dudes!

He’s played 10 HS games, plays a position that typically takes 1-2 years to develop, and left HS early. I hope the young man succeeds for his own sake but it seems like his handlers rushed him to get the NIL bag instead of allowing him to develop and put himself in the best position for both the NIL and NFL bags

Rosen was a first round draft pick and had a nice college career. Klubnick has looked good this year outside of UGA and USCe games.

None, really, though Underwood would have made us feel a lot better about the future. It is what it is. Maybe if he’s here we don’t land the recruit or transfer that becomes the next LSU Heisman QB. Just never know.

That's more on the hype than the player. TL is only the 2nd true Fr to start and win a natty game. Played fir another when we beat them. '20 was the Covid season and a giant asterisk.
