and knowing what we know now, should LSU have cut Les Miles loose and tried to get Saban back to BR when he left the Dolphins?

Interesting question. I vote YES

I mean, yeah with hindsight it's a no-brainer.

Would've looked stupid at the time if we had done it though considering Les was on the cusp of a title and Saban had just gotten chewed up and spit out of the NFL.

One's stock was at an all-time high and one was at an all-time low.

If only Miles could have sucked for those 2 years…we might have 8 or 9 NCs

Straight up?

Thats easy. Of course you take Saban over Miles. I was conflicted even back then because I knew how good Saban was. I don't blame the school. They made the safe and logical choice. Les had been solid and everyone knew 2007 could be special.

Let's look at your question from a different lens.

Programs that hinged on one man...built by one man...how do those programs fare longterm?

Through what we went through with Saban we went to Miles had success then it peaked, so we tried again, Ed had one of the best seasons ever...now we have BK and are primed to potentially run the West

As envious as I can be over what Bama was able to do over that span...a program is a living breathing thing...would I rather LSUs historic run with Saban or LSUs consistent relevance in football and the chance to start another dynasty type run...

I've already suffered the pain and the price emotionally, mentally from what Bama became

I'm ready to enjoy what LSU can be. I'm ready to watch Bama try to replace that man

I understand possibilities but I also understand probability

Most Bama fans today would rather be in our shoes than theirs and damn for the first time in a long time it feels good

Anyone would say yes. Even Les Miles would say yes to that.

Saban tried to come back before he wound up at Alabama and was told “no thanks”. He burned a lot of bridges at LSU.

People see the success at Bama, and assume it would have happened at LSU just the same but that’s unlikely. He wouldn’t have anywhere near the network of bagmen to have the recruiting success,
the Bama connections at ESPN to promote the program or in the SEC office.

Saban had exactly 1 season with fewer
than 3 losses at LSU.

Yeah but les miles was having success and you would have fired him for a guy who just ditched you? At the time the upper brass COULDNT have known that miles would eventually flame out and that Saban would build a monster at bama

Nah bro, 3 HCs and two NCs over the GOAT and 7 titles was clearly the move. Tf?

In hindsight, no question. But no way it was actually going to happen.

Also in hindsight—two loss Les. Four fricking first round draft picks from that 2006 team but it’s Les Lose Two.

Another thing to consider in hindsight—what if the stars had not just aligned in 2007 and that team was just another Les Miles two-loss team that missed the NCG?

100 percent yes and the answer was 100 percent yes that day.

Skip wanted no part of Saban back.

We also could have probably gotten him back in 07 if we had told Miles to walk to Michigan. He was coming off losing to ULM and a middling season.

I have always thought about this. What if Nick stays in Miami for 1 more season, Les gets hired by Michigan (like the rumor was until Herbie blew it up in 07), and then we hire Nick back for 2008? If Nick would have just fulfilled his contract.

Reportedly it was in the works after we lost our first game then Miles upset Tennessee and went on the 10 game win streak and we got stuck with him!

Should we have tried to rehire the greatest college coach of the modern era?

Yeah.
