I understand not being overly optimistic, but isn't this the kind of hire we wanted?

Not from the Good Ol Boy network of recycled coaches, a hungry up and comer, coached in the NFL so obviously has an understanding of the game, young guy that can relate to this generation of players better than Pelini. Recommended by Aranda and Zimmer. Seems to know good Bourbon.

What am I missing?

I don't think this assumption you are making is appropriate.

Orgeron coached in the NFL.

I think people are hesitant based on that issue combined with a lack of experience at the coordinator level. If we find out that he does have an exceptional understanding of the game, it will change a lot of people's minds.

Judge the man by his performance. He’s a communicator and motivational guy. If we bring back all of our CB’s I suspect we will be greatly improved from last season.

He may turn out to be a great hire. Let's hope so. Although, if he does turn out to be a great hire, that will really put the Ed O haters back in their mope and take away that euphoric feeling they're currently feeling after last season's 5-5 record and horrendous D.

You don’t get it do you? LSU fans want an up and comer that has proven success but has never had any negatives on their resume and has been coaching for a minimum of 100 years while also only being 35 at the absolute oldest. It’s so reasonable we are lsu. Should be able to get that guy.

We have fans that hate O. Those fans can't get past the fact he got hired. Still claim the only reason he was hired was bc he said he would hire the best coordinators...anyone who believes that got him the job is an idiot not to mention there are many ways to interpret "best" coordinators.

His resume doesn’t show recent success at running a defense in nearly a decade. And the one experience he does have was in div 2 at a program I’m sure none of us heard of. The only positive thing on this guys resume is that he is highly respected by some solid coaches. His resume screams entry level dc at a mid major not a top program( at least I thought we were but apparently not)in the SEC.
Hopefully We are all wrong on this.

He has been a D Coordinator before, though. Saying he hasn't simply isn't true. It just wasn't at the P5 level. LSU fans have been begging for a young "up-and-comer" instead of an older retread. Retreads come with experience at this level. Youn up-and-comers don't. It's a high risk/high reward scenario.

My biggest disappointment is that he comes in as a DB coach adding to what we already have at DB. I think we need a strong LBs coach. I was hoping the DC would come with that in mind. Imo we now need a home run LB hire.

I don't see much hate.

Just a lot of people uneasy because there isn't a lot to go on with him.

he's an unknown, a blank canvas if you will. you can make him as good or bad as you want to because of that.

the biggest concern is that he lacks any real worthwhile DC experience. the second concern is he wasn't exactly elite as a positional coach in the NFL.

Because people on here think they know everything about football and what goes into creating a staff that will meld together.

How many Power 5 schools were beating down the doors to hire him as DC? Same situation as Ogre who Syracuse did not even want when we hired him.
Guess we find out soon enough .......

Understand that some would not be happy if we brought back Nick Saban as DC because of his age or demeanor.

You're missing that he has never achieved strong results at any of his recent stops. You're similarly missing that he hasn't called plays in over a decade.

To be clear: I am NOT saying that these facts prove him to be a bad coach--only that they do not prove him to be a *good* coach. And we are a big enough job that we shouldn't have to hire completely unproven commodities.

Again: I am NOT shitting on Jones. I was admittedly annoyed with the hire at first, but I have since convinced myself that it could work out well. HOWEVER, that doesn't change the fact that he has far more and bigger question marks than most realistic candidates for your typical LSU coordinator opening.

He was a DC at a D2 school over 10 years ago Kudus on the attempt to dress that up though.
