This is the kind of war I can get behind.

quote:

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — They were caught in the middle of a gas war. Drivers say they were the winners.
“Ain’t it a wonderful day for America,” an excited Wartanna Haywood told Channel 2’s Tom Jones as she pumped regular gas that costs her only $1.14.

quote:

Managers at the Amoco and its next door neighbor Sunoco on Marietta Street told Channel 2’s Tom Jones they were in the midst of a gas war. Amoco said its policy is to set its gas prices five cents lower than its neighbor.

quote:

“We’ll be like five cents lower than you and they don’t want to agree with that, so now it’s a war,” an Amoco manager said.

quote:

It got so bad Powder Springs police arrived an ordered all drivers in the streets waiting to get into the two gas stations to leave.

Police blocked entrance to the pumps. Once traffic died down they allowed drivers back inside.

Amen

There were gas price wars in South Louisiana in the early ‘70s. This image purportedly was taken in Louisiana around then but the pricing probably wasn’t during a gas price war. That was a normal price in around ‘70-‘71 or so.

It was obviously before the ‘73 Arab oil embargo.

People used to flock to stations participating in price wars, even at age 10 I realized that idling in a long line to save a quarter or two over 30 or 60 minutes was a false economy.

Wait

I use Kroger points at their pump and get good deals with no lines near me ever (yesterday got $1.20 off per gallon, although it's usually less than that). I'm in a pretty low population area and the kroger pumps are always empty.

I had no IDEA that shopping on Fridays was 4x fuel points. I need to see if that is the case everywhere.

Occasionally this site really rewards you for the wasted time spent on here

I'm now looking at the Kroger credit card 3x points in store, 4x at pumps, and 5x on grocery delivery, and a free Boost membership. No annual fee and points don't expire. Can't decide if that's better than just earning travel miles with other cards.

We shop there for groceries by the far the most and 90% of the time for gas - and I have a Costco credit card for when we go to Costco.

The sexiest thing about that picture is the gas at 0.29/gallon.

Hard to believe. Don't gas station sell gas at nearly cost? That means if they have a 10k gallon tank that they are taking roughly a $20k loss every time they refill is the story is true.

Yeah I've always understood that they make their money on the convenience stores and the gas is at/near cost just to attract foot traffic to the stores.

But maybe that's not the case or not the case everywhere.

That's a pretty different calculus than saving $3x20 = $60 bucks over 30 to 60 minutes.
