The issue isn't lack of numbers or talent; it's lack of experience.

They're young, that's it. I can't say we're "loaded" but we have more than an adequate number of wide receivers.

In fact, we don't really have much of a shortage of skill players, across the board now. And even defensive linemen - we have three nose tackles now.

The only shortage we can reasonably identify at this point is offensive linemen. Someone posted earlier that we only played 9 Oline guys in a meaningful way in 2016. Personally, I think we should have 18 to 21 scholarship offensive linemen. We have 11 - even if that's "enough" - I view it as a shortage. I think even 15 or 16 would be a little light in that group.

85 scholarships

3 QBs
5 RBs
6 TE/FB/H-B
9 WR
18 OL
12 DL (3-4)
15 LB (3-4)
14 DBs
3 Specialists

Obviously we're not at those numbers. By far the biggest "need" is OL. No other position group is short - most are overstrength.
Agree.

If you want to "reload" instead of "rebuild" you have to have depth, that gets experience, in that position group.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick OL. And yes, a choice had to be made to some degree. All depends on how/when you choose to get them that experience. Or you can not get them experience and "rebuild".

Didn't see a ton from Gage because he wasn't given a lot of opportunities. But you have to remember that one amazing catch on the absolute edge of the end zone. That showed me something.

The other guys will get in a rhythm in time. Luckily they will have a few games where we can ground and pound to victory if necessary while they get adjusted to the speed of the game. Just hope a few are ready to step up against Moo St.

Plenty enough bodies at WR. Chark had 26 catches last year and 26 in his career. Gage, Anderson, and Davis didn't have 10 catches between them. Nobody else at WR had a catch. Frankly I'm not very worried about them, but perhaps that is a mistake on my part.

Inexperience but talented group, so I'm not really concerned. With Canada's much more fluid and distributive offensive approach than we've had the last several years, getting the TEs involved, and the ability of our RB to catch out of the backfield I feel that all the pressure won't be on just a couple WR like we've seen. I expect a couple guys at least will emerge as NFL talented receivers just like we always have so that will help.

The offensive, as usual, will hinge on the QB being able to get it to all these guys and keep defenses honest. I have confidence in Canada to coach Etling up and get him where we need him to be. We'll be fine, possibly very very good on that side of the ball

We are used to WR development under Miles where it takes 3 years for them to emerge. We have a lot of young guys hopefully Canada is able to develop them faster

I can recall more than a few WRs that were impact WRs right off the bat.

It won't be a concern any longer when our offensive system gets multiple players the ball in space to make plays. Every team has these concerns the problem is that LSUs history with WRs that don't have experience hasn't been good in the previous regime. IMO this changes with Canada but people will have to see it first.

It is about quality depth, not the number of players.

Unless someone else emerges, Chark is our only next-level WR, and he is a second tier draftee. There is no Odell Beckham Jr, Jarvis Landry, Dwayne Bowe, Michael Clayton, or Josh Reed on this team.

Don't block well, don't see the field.

I don't know for sure that was true under Miles, but I feel like it was

It absolutely was the case under Les. And thats precisely the reason we saw LF and guice break so many long runs.

I dont care how talented a WR is, if he can't block, the running game will not be explosive. You need at least one WR on the field that can block...see OBJ and Jarvis.

The WR depth issue was several months ago and it was for 2018 not 2017. Before the addition of the TT WR and Jefferson in the offseason, along with Stevens switching position to WR, we were looking at the possibility of only 6 returning WRs for 2018. With attrition, it could have been only five or four. That's why we were expecting to sign at least 4 for the 2018 class.

2017 at WR was about the lack of experience. Experience for the starters and for depth purposes. Only 2 players on that list have caught at least 5 passes. Only one has caught more than five.

I don't have him that high, but I got him leading LSU in yards per catch and receiving TDs. Reminds me of Andre Johnson.

They do. Anytime I see Gage's name mentioned ahead of Davis I chuckle a bit. It's not that I think he's bad, but Davis is just so much more overwhelmingly talented. All he needed was to get the mental part of the game down.

I wrote off Gage as an anomaly so many times.. but I think the kid will actually be really good for us. He looks like a natural and that he doesn't have to think too much when he's playing. Plus, he's an awesome blocker. I think the fact that he was a 3 star safety that barely got an offer makes me still think in the back of my head that he's unathletic. Could've been a later bloomer

Because I have two eyes and a brain. Davis could emerge, but so far he is more potential than production. Anderson has talent but he's in the doghouse so won't see much time. Sullivan is a tweener who might make a great receiving TE if he learns how to play with his hand in the dirt.

I mean, which guy do you think is on that level?

5 receivers leaving and Durall getting injured is why you saw gage. He stayed when others left. Now we have young talented receivers who we need to give experience to.they need playing time ... not only so we can be successful this year but so they will be ready for our new QB going into next year. Next year will be our year especially if our young receivers are ready

yeah, no doubt.

2 positions that Les was not afraid to play freshmen was WR and RB. We usually always played the talent over the experience.
