Former star running back Justin Vincent, a 1,000-yard rusher on that 2003 National Championship squad, has very vivid memories of Saban’s departure from Baton Rouge.

quote:

In a recent interview, Vincent recalled the legendary coach not being truthful with the team during the process, a week of practice in Orlando which players were disrespectful to the coaching staff, and a baffling defensive blunder that cost LSU the Capitol One Bowl and a victory in Saban’s final contest with the Tigers.

What ever happened to that Saban guy? I lost track of him because I don’t follow the NFL.

Good, now get us the interview with what happened after 1/9/11

Saban could have left LSU numerous times for the NFL and that was his ultimate goal. Lucky LSU had him for the 2003 run. The NFL was on his radar long before he came to LSU. They were after him at Michigan St.

One bad QB decision probably cost him a Super Bowl.

Well he made one of the all time blunders when took Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees in free agency and then ran with his tail between his legs back to the college ranks after he realized that millionaire professional football players weren’t going to put up with him getting in their faces and yelling at them.

Did alright for himself after that though.

The clips of Saban saying "I love the Tigers.....I plan on being here forever" or something to that effect was pretty jarring. Like, I know he was kind of a wet blanket when talking to media, but I don't remember seeing that brief interview and I'm pretty sure he was convincing nobody

Saban dominated college ball, because the coaching competition was weak. he took a professional approach to all aspects of the college game, and he was backed by Mark Emmert.

In the pros, half the coaches were already operating that way. Saban left the pros because, though he had the professionalism of Belichick, he had not the genius. There was going to be no Super Bowls for Nick Saban.

People forget that Pete Carroll dominated college football for a while AND won a Super Bowl (should have two).

I know he’s not popular here because of 2003, but he’s arguably got the better overall resume even with less championships.

There was a rumor that Ronnie Prude tore into Saban after game including yelling “you’re not our coach anymore” .
We played terrible against the Hawkeyes. I was there and the winning TD happened right in front of where we were seated.
Saban and Jimbo mishandled the quarterback situation that day as they had numerous times during the season.

The blown coverage was Ronnie Prude's fault. He came in on the last play and for some reason thought the call was zone. The Iowa WR ran right by him uncovered.

You can see Saban calling him out immediately after the game on the field. Its all shown in Jaques interview

Admins wouldn't allow the thread to survive. I dropped a few nuggets one day and got warned off by the king.

because that was the call. makes no difference if we were in prevent man, prevent zone, quarters or whatever. the call was the call and Prude did the opposite

Saban wasn't the coach at LSU on 1/9/11.

Why would that even be in the interview?

Fine, but having no deep safety or safeties in a Hail Mary situation is a recipe for disaster. Look at Bama 2019 and see what happened to Stingley.

Yes Prude didn’t get the call and yes Stingley messed up, but the coach has some responsibility here also. He’s supposed to put his guys in the best situation.
