Speaking of Derrick Taylor , we at our high school started wearing our High Tops with no socks showing and piece of tape around our leg at the bottom of knee. We thought that , that LOOK was the sht. I played the whole season that way

Bernard Woodside
Ricky Blanton
Oliver Brown
Jose Vargas
Nikita Wilson

He didn’t suck, but he was just a good coach - not great. That year is a good example. If Bob Knight had LSU’s talent they would not have been an 11 seed. LSU was a top 8 team in the country on talent, and Dale Brown managed them down to an 11 seed.
Yeah-

Goddam it, Dale let half the team catch Chicken Pox, to where they had football players like Chris Carrier having to walk on midseason and actually play minutes, in the middle of the conference schedule.

This WAS a ranked team, until that happened- which was both completely out of his control, and would have devastated ANY team's season. A lot of teams would have folded up shop for the year. It's a credit to Dale that we squeaked out enough wins to qualify for the tourney, and once the team was healthy again, anyone who knew basketball knew that wasn't your typical 11 seed. If they could have kept Nikita Wilson eligible (academics), that was probably Dale's best team to win it all. Ahead of the 89-90 team with CJ, Shaq and Stanley.

Nikita + John Williams together would have been lethal in the paint, and Redden and Taylor could shoot 3's with anyone.

Such great memories... Williams missing the front end of one and one and allowing Kentucky to get off a 3 for the win nearly gave me a heart attack. We were so close to a natty.

I remember that day. I was on spring break and I rode a Greyhound bus from Houston to lake Charles. My mom picked me up in LC and drove me to Baton Rouge. We listened to the game and then stopped at Tony’s seafood on plank road for some boiled shrimp. Great day !

Indiana. It wouldn’t have counted anyway. Took too long . Time ran out. Bobby Knight could D up and not let you get a shot off.

There was no 3 point line for college back in 1986. That 3 point line on the court was for the nba. If UK made the half court shot, it would’ve tied the game. Think the 3 point line was introduced in college in either 1987 or 1988.

I just don't see the need to try to diminish LSU's accomplishments that year only because they were allowed to take advantage of NCAA rules that had been in existance since the tourney's inception

It’s not diminishing anything to point out the FACT that as an 11 seed LSU had an advantage over the 3 and 6 seed by getting to play those games at home. I don’t think anyone would disagree with that. You said “somehow, someway” LSU beat those teams. That was part of the somehow, someway. No one said LSU did anything nefarious to host the first two rounds. And no one said the NCAA knew LSU would be an 11 seed when LSU was named as a host site, but you’re foolish if you think that wasn’t a big advantage. It’s why the rule was changed two years later.

The 86 run was still a great accomplishment. You’re being overly sensitive

having beaten #6 seed Purdue,#3 seed Memphis

It's noteworthy that for the first two tournament games LSU was the host team (as the #11 seed) in the PMAC.

Now host sites for tourney participants was quite commonplace before 1986. However, generally the hosts were highly seeded teams, not #11. The outcry that year from Purdue's Gene Keady and Memphis' Dana Kirk put an end to the practice of participants hosting early-round games. But, for one shining moment, the Tigers shined brightly, and well vindicated their status as a worthy participant by upsetting Georgia Tech (in Atlanta)! and #1 Kentucky.

This was truly the high summer of Dale's tenure at LSU.

Was the 3-point shot rule in effect that season? I seem to remember it being put in place in 1986-87.

I was a student at the time. Maybe my favorite LSU basketball win of all time. If you are too young to remember, LSU/Kentucky was a massive rivalry in the 80's. We were the only school in the SEC that could keep pace with them. To lose three times in one year, it was so gratifying to beat them to go to the final 4.

I was there. I will never forget walking out of the game and a UK guy screaming “ f you- we beat you 3 times”….

The best tourney run in LSU history because of the quality of opponents.
