Saban did not start his career at Alabama in a grand manner by losing to ULM and five other teams and the fans were grumbling and the Mayflower trucks kept showing up at Saban's door and many started looking for Shula's phone number trying to get him to come back.
He recovered nicely and became the legend he is now.

I am so over this narrative. If you think there weren't bagmen at LSU who were giving $ to players you're being completely disingenuous. If you think him doing it is cheating but everyone else, and yes EVERYONE else in the Power 6 conferences were doing it is not cheating then you're hypocritical.

He’s always gonna have more of a love for Alabama than LSU. Hate to break it to yall. But he’ll always be considered as an Alabama football coach, not a LSU football coach. Les Miles is the best head football coach in our programs history.

I think a lot of men as they get into their later years in life appreciate the experiences that were ultimately where they found out who they really were and the all the people that helped them get to to the pinnacle.

Let's be real. Saban was never THAT unlikable. He just wasn't ours anymore and was an obstacle to us for a decade or more. It is understandable that we hated him, but it really wasn't due to much more than his greatness. Now that he his not in our way, we can view him in a less emotional way. It is not unlike the fact that I hated Kiffin until he became our guy. Things change.

Yes but what's overlooked is that during his career Alabama had 3 referees that were alumni of Alabama. One of who was the head of refs, lived in Tuscaloosa and was on the Tuscaloosa Rotary club. That is not exaggerated.

That would have been funny and would have changed the course of football history quite a bit.
The only disaster in Saban's first year though was the loss to ULM. They were in every game they played and lost by one score or less in every game. And they played a hell of a schedule...UGA, FSU , etc. And they had us on the ropes over there even though we ended up winning the national championship. It was clear that Bama was gonna be really good under him once he had more time to recruit.
