Also expect Taylor to make a big jump. He had freshman inconsistencies last year but if that settles down he could be dominant
Taylor could be the wildcard. He has been pitching well in the Cape Cod leagues, really improving his control.

Is there a status report on Lansville? He was very highly rated.

Once upon a time, Wes and I coached "travel ball"
together. He's a great guy with a very positive personality. He's a driver but he's also very fair. He is a Christian man who lives out his faith. Don't let any of this fool you...he's a fierce competitor and a tireless teacher. He will impact this staff mentally before he ever starts to work on the mechanical stuff. He's no programs "savior". He would never say that or even think that. What Wes is, is a high-energy tactician that works very hard to improve young athletes. Guys will run through a brick wall for them. You can't understate the importance of that with 18-21 yr old young men!

Not a clue but it be nice for Coleman to come back strong after his injury and develop under Wes
Coleman won’t be an option until very late in the season if at all

Coleman, to me, is an obvious choice to sit out the whole season to save a roster spot

I think both can happen. I believe you can rotate guys early in the year to get midweek starts and the pitchers who dont throw the weekend out of the top starting freshman candidates can start the next midweek. Would take a little pre planning up front but I feel like it would benefit everyone. As the season rolls on you will have an idea of which roles which guys will fill and then change the plan accordingly. Come postseason you will have plenty guys with starting capabilities/long relief options. I think that is key to postseason baseball.

That one is tricky without knowing exactly where he is at with his rehab. He isn't expected to be able to throw live until April or May last I remember seeing. Then even when he is back it will take some time to knock the rust off. However, if he can throw live I'm not sure he would be happy having to sit out 2 seasons in a row.

I would think that be an option for sure because I don’t think he will be back to full strength till around middle of season anyway. Can he get a medical redshirt or something if that’s the decision?

TJ is weird. It can be anywhere from 10 to 18 month rehab depending on progress and setbacks. Determann was ready to go and strong 10 months after surgery. Some guys are forced along slower. I doubt Coleman has rushed anything. But he will be throwing off a mound come late Feb.

I would love to see Taylor become a closer. He just seems like he has that bulldog mentality and can crank that fastball up if he knows he only has to go an inning or two.

Wes has bounced around a lot the last 7 or 8 years. I’m curious what impact he really has in year one
I was wondering about this. People talking about this guy like he is a pitcher whisperer and everything he touches turns into Pedro Martinez or something. Is he really that good? Is he being talked about like this on here only because he signed with LSU?
I’m not trying to be negative about Wes. I just don’t know if he’s just a good pitching coach, or a magician who will fix every pitcher he works with and make them be their best selves.
Also, from reading this thread, I went from thinking this team will be unstoppable next year too “wait we still aren’t sure what’s gonna happen with the starting pitching”.
I thought they were bringing in guys from other teams to fix the problem, but apparently the solution is two guys who were on the team last year. I’m so confused.

After a few days of hype, we had turned him into a savior, a rock-star of a pitching coach that we convinced ourselves was going to add 2-3 mphs to all our guys’ fastballs, help them develop their 2nd and 3rd (maybe even 4th)pitches, and becomes masters of their command. But how?
Exactly what is going through my head right now. People on here just throw his name out there like, “oh Wes will fix it”.

Well you brought in a potential Friday night ace in Hurd and you’re still pushing for another weekend guy in Skenes.
But even with just Hurd you’ve solved a major problem.
If you had a Thatcher Hurd throwing fridays letting Hilliard and Floyd throw Saturday and Sunday with Dutton and Taylor being used out of the pen and out starting pitching gets drastically better last year.
Also guys get better. You saw Floyd drastically improve as his secondary pitches got better.
Little, from Vandy, has all of the necessary prerequisites to be a dominant weekend arm but he was pitching in college at 17 years old. He needs to develop more.
We have the arms to be a very very good staff.
As far as Wes goes pitchers seem to get better wherever he is coaching so we’re hopeful.

Coleman is going to start later in the season. Book it

Number one thing I look for in a pitching coach. But seriously, why is this relevant? What if a pitcher on the team isn’t a Christian? Will he not work as hard with that kid?
Also, why do I need my pitching coach to be a fierce competitor? He’s teaching, not getting ready to fight to the death.

Yea, I definitely wouldn’t bank on that.

Does anyone know when Skenes is visiting, and is it a MSU/LSU/Arkansas battle?
Posted on 7/21/22 at 5:51 pm to landrywasbeast30
Because first and foremost, that's how he would define himself. That may mean nothing to you but as a Christian myself, it's the first thing we would identify as. Not a coach...not a husband or father but a Christian. It matters in the way he does things. It matters in taking care of people's kids with integrity. He's not going to be out there witnessing to kids vs. working on their pitching, but they will see the difference. If they want to talk about it, he certainly would. Since we believe Christ is the only way to Heaven, and hell is real, is it a bad thing that we share that good news with people? We all are defined by something and he(and I) are glad that we are defined by our faith.
