New NCAA recruiting rule for college baseball

NCAA baseball just passed legislation that prohibits college baseball teams from committing or basically recruiting a player till August 1st of their Junior Year. This is a game changer imo.I see it as a positive.

Agree, better for the players this way.

The way it's being explained so far is that the coach cannot have any contact with the kid other than on campus camps. And at that camp they are not allowed to "recruit" the kid

They will just "randomly" bump into players to get around rules just like they do now.

Softball made this change a couple of years ago & it's made it much less stressful for everyone. This stops the coaches from getting 8th and 9th graders to "commit" and gives the late bloomers a better chance at a good school.
I had a kid once who dramatically improved from her sophomore to her junior season & even more into her senior season. D1 coaches were telling me she's good enough to play for them, but they were full because of the commitments of 8th-10th graders. It turned out OK for her as she played D3 & is now in med school.

But the schools don’t have to honor those early commitments. that’s why this rule helps.

The recruiting will still happen via camps and games. It’s the direct contact that can’t take place till then. It’s a great rule.

Yoi dont think not being able to build that relationship early will have an impact on more players going straight to the minors?

Nope. You’ll still get plenty of time to get to know them and vice versa. Again, it doesn’t mean zero contact.

No.
MLB is doing everything it can to make it to where only the very top of the high school crop gets drafted and signs. Fewer draft picks, but more importantly fewer MILB teams, levels, and roster spots.
This won't change which level players go to, it may just shuffle them around a little bit.
It's a good rule.

I'm not sure I take that as a positive.

Can you explain how you see it as a positive for LSU if we cannot "recruit" a kid until hes a junior?

Here's one way. In baseball, once a player commits, the recruiting by other schools shuts down. By keeping a player in play longer, LSU will be in the recruiting game longer, especially for out of state players. Also, players get better or don't get better from Freshman to Junior years, so this rule will allow for better evaluations. The schools will better be able to determine if the player can play at the conference level, and the player will better be able to evaluate if he truly belongs at the school. The rule is just better for the players. It's stops stock piling of players by schools who have no intention of honoring all of the offers.

This is the same rule as softball. My daughter is going into her junior year next year. She is on a college showcase travel team. She can still attend camps, she can reach out to coaches via email, they just cannot contact her directly until August 1. She had one girl on her school team committed to Southeastern in 8th grade. By the time she got to her Senior year, was totally burnt out and decided not to play at the next level. As a parent, I like the rule.

This is great for the players. Top college programs are known for getting players to "commit" early in high school. This keeps other schools away. A few years later, they'll drop many of those commits leaving them scrambling. The truth of the matter is that the kids that are superstars at 15 are sometimes not superstars at 18. The change is a positive development.

Not it doesn't, it just states no permissible contact. The colleges can still recruit the kids through coaches and handlers. They can also talk to said handler on speaker phone and kid happens to be very close... As others stated too, they can talk to these kids at their camps as well.
