One thing I notice is the great teams don't do drastic changes. You only saw it in the early years like only the sleeves having color because it was expensive to buy color fabric.

If we're talking about Alabama's logo, it wasn't that long ago that they were using this:
The emphasis on the "script A" logo came soon after.

Not sure if that's true but it's a good story. A logo that looks like a real tiger is better than a logo that looks like a toy. Maybe it's an unpopular sentiment but anybody who reads this rant can name 10 great football programs that never change their helmet logo. Winning teams don't have to do that and they shouldn't. I could live with the wrong looking shoulder stripes and stretched numbers last year, but this seems like its going to continue to happen every year. We should focus on winning games first instead of selling merchandise.
WTF???
Wtf does the AD and marketing dept have to do with the footba...
frick it, you aren't even worth the time...

Did anyone concider that the cleanup of the logo was done with television concideration in mind? Like when they show standings or scores and such.
The reason the old logo is never used on tv is because it probably looks like shite when it's shrunken down. Can't tell what the hell it is.
The new cleaner logo will probably be much more tv friendly.

Probably so. I wouldn't be surprised if they "clean up" the midfield logo too for tv. It's going to look like crap too but that's not the point. People who don't understand how it works won't care. It looks like a student worked up that logo in a few hours in adobe illustrator. It doesn't look traditional or natural at all. It just looks cheap. I do this stuff for a living. Let me know when the Saints change their helmet logos. Or for that matter, BMW, Nike, McDonalds, any successful brand. It's not about arguing. At the end of the day I'll still have a job and you'll still have an opinion. And the school got screwed over by somebody. Nike probably had something to do with it.

The fact that you do this for a living and still think this is a rebrand is scary

It's not terrible or anything, but I very much prefer the old one. It just looks more aggressive and rough. The new one is too smooth and symmetrical. I believe Tounces was an extreme attempt at softening the logo so more women would buy gear. I'm 29 by the way.

My understanding is they cleaned the old tiger head up to make it.easier to reproduce with screenprinting and the like. They claim the older head was to much of a jumbled mess and was difficult to manufacture merchandise.

FWIW the Saints have changed their helmet logo. About as subtle as this tiger change.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the original tiger head on the helmet from a picture that someone took from the original Mike the Tiger Mascot, or something like that. They riled him up and snapped a shot and used that photo to make the helmet? I always thought that was a cool bit of history surrounding the helmet.
They must've poked him in the eye while they were getting him "riled up".

I always go with tradition but this new logo looks good and doesn't change from the old logo much. I think it is fine.

I love the new logo. I love having a unified logo across all apparel. No issue with this whatsoever.

Why do they put those holes in the helmet? The old ones looked sooooooo much better
Posted on 4/6/14 at 12:22 pm to thejudge
That's exactly why they did it and it's not going to work. Going to one BCS game in the last 6 years and barely playing in the NCAA tournament made it harder to sell merchandise. The logo isn't the problem. I don't come on here to bitch about the coach or the players or the fans. But when the administration makes a dumb move somebody has to say something. I understand that some of the regulars actually do think they know design better than I do. I work at a Madison Avenue firm and have been in the business for a long time. Somebody fricked up in this case.
