I know that it is prime baseball and preseason football time, but I thought these rule changes were worth posting in here.

quote:

On Wednesday, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved moving the 3-point line to 22 feet, 1.75 inches in men's basketball. That's the same distance as the international line.

quote:

Instead of being reset to 30 seconds, the shot clock will now reset at 20 seconds if a field goal attempt hits the rim and the offensive team rebounds the ball in the front court.

Weren't these two rules in the NIT last couple of years? I like both of them.

They were. They've been testing them both out, and they didn't see too much of a difference. They only major rule changes they didn't implement were a wider lane and resetting foul counts after ten minutes. The three point line didn't effect the shooting percentage too much, so the shot clock should have a bigger impact.

"Teams were 474-of-1,436 (33.0%) from behind the extended arc, while teams shot an average of 34.4 percent from 3 over the course of the season, according to kenpom.com."

Not a fan of this one. Guess I'm old school. The shot clock already takes away from teams being patient on offense, moving the ball around, running sets. I liked the 45 second shot clock when it first came out. Prevented teams like Princeton from bogging the game down or teams holding the ball like North Carolinas 4 corners. 30 seconds is okay, teams still rush their shots, no passing, take first open shot regardless where it's from or a lot of one-on-one basketball instead of running motion, high low picks, screens, etc. Teams still do a little of this but it's 3 sets and then throw it up from where ever if nobody gets a good shot. We've got run and gun basketball in the NBA. Wish they'd just left college alone. I guess now there will be 2 reset buttons that reset the time to 30 seconds and one to 20 seconds. This should be interesting too.

Since everyone here likes it, Lester Earl will be along soon to tell you all that you’re wrong.

10 minute quarters. I wouldn't mind it. You'd add a couple more minutes of intensity to the game at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters. I'm surprised that media hasn't pushed for this for more opportunity for commercial breaks.

To me it would be less breaks which is why they would be against it

under 5 and that's it during quarter

Current:
1st half
1. under 16
2. under 12
3. under 8
4. under 4
5. Halftime
2nd half
6. under 16
7. under 12
8. under 8
9. under 4

New:
1st quarter
1. Under 5
2. 2nd quarter
3. under 5
4. halftime
3rd quarter
5. under 5.
6. 4th quarter
7. under 5

Assume time outs are even between the 2, 2 less breaks

I never understood why men’s college b-ball is the only version that doesn’t use 4 quarters.

I like the new rule under the review section:

17.b - Following a tip-in and review when there is no time left on the clock, Kentucky fans and media will accept defeat and act like they have been there before, which they have, in 2019 when SEC Champion LSU and SEC Champion Head Coach Will Wade defeated Kentucky at Rupp Arena as time expired.

I dislike the shot clock rule. The last few minutes of a game already take long enough. This just makes it easier for teams to foul in order to draw out a game and hope for an unlikely comeback. The leading team can’t run nearly as much clock in the final few minutes. Games will be longer, shot selection will be worse, and the complexity of the game will suffer

Thanks - A good one on the 3-point line.

I wonder if the shot clock reset will be a big difference. It seems that teams shoot pretty quickly after an offensive rebound, or maybe I just notice more when teams kick it out for an open 3.

I wish for the 4 quarters, the reset of team fouls each quarter, and getting rid of the one and one foul shots. Foul shots begin on the 5th personal each quarter as two shots. I also like the offensive team being able to advance the ball to half court if they wish with a time out at the end of a game. This is in the women's game and creates more excitement, IMO.
