I don't think coaches should have to listen to everyone's personal stories. Honestly, they aren't interested, they don't have the time, and would rather spend that time with their own family.

no they shouldn't...but they know its going to happen from time to time and should act appropriately when it does...

quote:Eloquent. True. The OP story is a persuasive one, in terms of calling all LSU fans (posi and negatigers alike) to look again at this incredible coach we've got (who can at once infuriate and yet be brilliant in his offbeat methodology).
Saban is no doubt a great Football coach, but to me it means much more to be a great Man.
I am starting to have a new appreciation for Les Miles, the coach, the man, and the LSU Tiger.

Likewise people should show respect and not bother them. Two way street.

Yes, Les is a great guy who runs a clean program yada yada yada, but he is just not a very smart man and is a deeply flawed football coach....sorry that is the simple truth....

I already stated and agreed as such but they too should show respect to people when it does happen...two way street...

Today, for the first time I had to 2 huge Gator fans tell me that they really liked Miles. One even said that he remined him of Spurrier in that he didn't care what people thought of him, is his own man and has that maverick type of coaching style.

Football is a way of life in Louisiana. I know, I live by the rules of football. But football is not everything and winning is not everything. Saban is loved because he wins. While Miles wins, he is loved for his character. In the end, it's the kind of person you are that will leave an impression on you. Mark Ingram may say 40 years down the road, "Yeah Saban was a great coach, but he sure was an a-hole." Stevan Ridley may say, "Miles was a great coach and all, but he was a great man who truly cared about us."

Ive had several encounters with Nick Saban and Les Miles a few years ago when I worked at the BR airport. When Saban was still here you were lucky to get a hello out of him when he walked by. A coworker and I unloaded 2 expeditions full of his stuff on to the airplane before he went on vacation and he tipped us 3 dollars to share. This was right after he signed that new contract. His wife on the other hand was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met.
I met Miles a few years later right before football season and was very impressed with his character. Him and his family were extremely nice and appreciative of our help. We unloaded 3 small bags and he said" I only have $20 on me, is that enough?" Every other encounter I had with him was always very pleasant. I even saw him whip his kid's butt in the parking lot of acting up with we were unloading their stuff. He also never hesitated from signing an autograph. I haven't always agreed with some of his coaching decisions but I have never questioned his character. I still feel very fortunate to have him as our coach.

What was Saban supposed to say?

Miles kicked Saban's arse in the 2nd half yesterday. Great to see him into the game with some emotion instead of standing there with his arms folded. Our kids respond to his want to win.

He's Nick fricking Saban. You should be tipping him for taking up his personal space and for making you feel that, for once in your life, you actually matter.

I have a similar Les Miles story.
I was at fan day last year, I arrived late because I had been driving back from Destin. I knew I had time to get, at the most, one big autograph, so I decided to get Les's autograph. I waited for over an hour. I wanted Les to sign the large schedule poster and one of the tiny wallet size schedule cards. My Dad collects the small schedule cards and has been doing since he was a student at LSU in the late 70's early 80's.
I finally got to the table that Les was at. I was told by a smart aleck LSU event staff woman that I could only get Les to autograph either the poster or the schedule card but not both, so I reluctantly decided to just have Les sign the poster.
When I got to Les he said hello and signed my poster and I thanked him. As I was about to leave I decided to see if he'd sign my schedule card, I figured what the hell the worst he can say is no.
So I pulled out the card and I told him that my ole' man collected these and that it would mean a lot to him if he would sign it. Les chuckled and said, "you mean your Dad," I laughed and said yes. Les then smiled and said I'd be happy to do that. He wrote on the card, "To my Dad-Les Miles."
I know this story is just anecdotal, but I think it shows Les's love for the fans.I think Les has embraced his role as an ambassador for LSU football. I think he truly likes the fans, because he can relate to being a fan of a football team. Saben can't relate to being a fan of a football team, because he's never been a fan of anything, except maybe money.
Geaux Les; Geaux Tigers! Congratulations on out coaching Nick Saben!

I have never met Coach Miles, but hope to do so someday. I don't live in Louisiana and don't travel as much as I used to, so I may not get to. But I am not surprised and have no doubt I would enjoy meeting him as much as I did Coach Gerry DiNardo several years ago. I also met Coach Saban on one occasion.
I met Coach DiNardo several years ago when he still had a restaurant in Baton Rouge, but was no longer the coach. It was in the summer. A friend and I asked an employee there if he ever visits and she told us, every once in a while, but not that often. However, about 15 minutes later, sure enough we saw him walk in. He posed for pictures with some patrons, was very cordial. We said hello to DiNardo and looked at different football pictures on the wall. I kidded him about being in the same group picture as Tiger corner Mike Williams in the 70's, a group of All-Americans. He told us some interesting things about a few of the other players pictured and it was a really enjoyable conversation.
I met Coach Saban one night as I was in town when he did his radio talk show. He did sign a cap I had brought and I do remember how efficient he was, as on every commercial break, he would go around the room & sign something, but only briefly spoke or nodded to the people whose items he autographed. He was obviously trying to sign as many as possible. Again, I would describe him as being very businesslike.

just finished reading all the replies. Awesome stuff. One of the best threads i have seen on here.
I saw Jamarcus russell last night at an event, and i tried to get him to answer a question for me, but there was just to many people and i was too busy. I was going to ask him this very question, i have a feeling he would say saban is a better coach, but not today
I also remember when miles gave up some of his salary to give to the assistants.
I hope he stays here for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if auburn, tennessee, florida, and alabama are all hit with some sort of probation in one way or another in the near future.
Gotta love les! How can you not? I can't think of one coach even remotely like him.
