My Concern

Was Jay just giving lip service to the fans or did he truly feel this team was going to be his best?
I look at Yorke and wonder how in the world the coaches could have missed that badly.
How does Jay ensure we get better talent evaluations from the portal?

I never understood it, but it wasn't just Jay saying it. Moscona kept repeating how this was the most talented team Jay has ever had at LSU. I never felt that way about this team.

Probably a combination of both. A coach is almost always going to talk up his team before the season, but he also probably thought they would be much better. I bet he didn’t expect the majority of his returning pitchers to regress.
There’s no way to “ensure” anything. He’ll look at what went wrong and try to do better going forward. That’s really all there is to it.

Aren’t you a coach?
Did you look at Yorke’s stats? How about his postseason stats against P4 competition? He has the talent.
This has been discussed quite a bit here. He came here hoping to transition from being a good hitter to being a power hitter. It didn’t work. THAT was the mistake with him, because he proved he can hit well vs good pitching. He couldn’t hit well for power vs non-con teams worse than the ones he used to face at Grand Canyon.
Dardar has LA connections and was a natural pick. And he’s been ok.
Caraway was the hottest player in the nation in the last postseason. It didn’t carry over, but no one complained about the pick.
Lach and Simpson were reaches and didn’t work.
It sucks being on this end, but we literally had a 100% hit portal class last year. Neither that or a mostly miss class is a likely result most years.

Outfield not tossing.

We were preseason number 1/2
It wasn’t just Jay,
It wasn’t just Jay,

This team on paper is very talented, especially pitching. Outfield was loaded. Infield was only real concern but thought it would work itself out.
Pitching was suppose to be extremely deep. I was never truly convinced that Evans or Schmidt were ready to be elite guys this year though. That being said this pitching staff has been just about impossibly bad. No one could have saw what has transpired coming.

Was…
During my career short term talent evaluation wasn’t part of the process. We had a feeder system with the junior high which was literally across the parking lot from the HS, so I was familiar with the kids I was getting. I’d watched them play since they were in Rec ball. About as far as evaluating the kids went was looking at them, looking at Mom and Dad and then projecting where they would play once they made it to me.
As I’ve often told folks, the most difficult part of my job was developing enough pitching. In years when we did struggle, it was always pitching related.

The sad part is that Jay could have recruited the best pitchers off the best teams in the nation last year. Everyone wanted to be a part of what was to be this year. I do think it will be more difficult to do that this year but everyone is right that the evaluation process can’t afford to miss this year.

Moscona doesn’t know shite.
He just repeats what others have said. If Jay said the team was good. Moscona reports the same.
The players that we got from the portal ranked very well. It was ranked the #1 portal class last year.
It wasn’t LSU or Jay ranking them.
This is speculation, but I think Jay was busy with the World Series last year and recruited the highest ranking players he could without having the time to properly vetted them himself. Just speculation….

Because they were basing his hitting and potential off OUR pitching in the fall! We all know now about that.

They probably looked like the 96 Braves when pitching against our Murderer’s Row lineup.
