One night they played at NLU in Monroe and student section had been raising hell. NLU actually had a top 5 in the country team for a time in the 80s, and the rivalry was fierce. Tech pulled off the win, and Mulkey gave a double barreled salute to the student section. It was a minor scandal in those times.

I can totally see this happening. I have heard all the stories, she was legend in her own time back even back then. Her and my brother are the same age and he knew her even though he went to Ponchatoula. Most ppl thought she was a bitch, but she really wasn’t she was just so intense and driven I guess she kind of give off that vibe. She was little but she didn’t take shite off anyone.

Those Tech teams were loaded with talent. She had plenty of post players to whom she could distribute the ball. Janice Lawrence, Pam Kelly and Debra Rodman were all on those teams. Yes, Rodman is Dennis Rodman's sister.

I can confirm, I was in that student section! Those games were fun. NLU had a good couple of years, it was a great rivalry back in the day

Eun Jung Lee (now Ok) was the Mulkey of Monroe. Incredible player. As a Tech fan, I feared her more than any player Tech faced.

E.J. Ok Is One of the Greatest Point Guards You Never Heard of

quote:

By game’s end, Lee posted 18 points and 11 assists for the night, while Ingram and Perry combined for 54 points, to lead NLU to a 85-76 victory and to a spot in the Final Four. Leon Barmore, Louisiana Tech’s head coach at the time, told Lee after the game: “I’ll be the happiest person when you graduate. Expect my flowers at your graduation.”

quote:

“Kim Mulkey (a former Louisiana Tech guard who played against Ok) later became the face of women’s basketball,” Ponti added.“But she met her match when she went one-on-one with E.J."

quote:

“E.J. is the best female point guard I’ve seen,” said (Dale) Brown, who coached Shaquille O’Neal at LSU in the early ’90s. “I don’t mean to embellish this, but she’s a female Pete Maravich. They had eyes all around their head. Great players perceive things that aren’t there. They diagram plays and know it in their head, and make that pass two seconds later. She was a phenom, I tell you. She had it all.”

Wow! I consider myself very knowledgeable on women's basketball and I'd not heard of EJ. I'm definitely going to research her more. Thanks for sharing.

I recall watching the Lady Techsters with Mulkey running the floor with those braids of terror flying around. National championship followed by a loss in the title game.
