LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey said a little numbness on the tip of her finger combined with curiosity resulted in her having a potentially life-saving heart procedure this summer.
Mulkey and the defending champions officially began practice in front of fans Monday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Tuesday, the Tigers are scheduled to have CPR training. Mulkey always thought it was an important skill for her players to learn, even before her procedure.
In late June, Mulkey had two stents put into a coronary artery that had 95-99% blockage. Mulkey had not experienced symptoms and had no idea she had any heart issues. She initially had gone to see a doctor about only a small, nagging issue, but then a chain reaction of procedures led to the discovery of the blocked artery.
"I never even felt bad," Mulkey said. "I'm still kind of in shock that we accidentally found this. So my message in sharing this is, if you're over 50, go get a stress test.

What is in the food and water in our Athletic nutrition center? Might have the unluckiest athletic department in the country when it comes to health scares.

A stress test is not what folks over 50 should be getting. Stress tests won’t turn up 95% blockage most of the time. There are cardiac CT scans that will identify blockage far earlier. They are expensive, but they are life savers.

Ive never seen her smoke before, but her skin seems to tell the story of a smoker

CAC scan
I am pretty sure you can get a Coronary Artery Calcium Scan (CAC) for around $99 if you pay cash at the hospital. I did in Florida. It shows the amount of blockage in your arteries. I had 0% blockage. Provides peace of mind if you have artery blockage in your family.

I’m 53 and I just did a calcium score. Cost 100 dollars for some peace of mind. Thankfully my score was Zero.

my calcium score was 1200 and I am still kicking by the grace of God only!

It’s really quite fortunate that she paid attention to her body. If you’re over 50 and if you have any heart problems in your immediate family, don’t mess around with certain symptoms such as pressure in the chest or tingling in the hand. Have it checked out immediately!

The odds of dying from stupidity are monumentally greater than the odds of dying from a routine vaccination.

Concur. I had it and thankfully I'm in the lowest category for my calcium score 10.

It shows the calcified plaque buildup on the wall of your arteries which can lead to blockage and hardening of the arteries. It may not be a blockage of any significance and you can have noncalcified plaques that will not show up in a CAC. However, it is supposed to be the single best diagnostic test to identify if chest pains are potentially life-threatening. My calcium score was zero earlier this year.

Couldn’t do a heart scan on me. Even with medication they couldn’t get my heart beat slow enough. Ended up with a stress test. Came back abnormal and ended up with three stents when they went in to check it out. I had no symptoms besides being tired. Was doing a full physical because I hit 50. Glad I did.

Who cares if you already knew prick, some of us don't have time to keep up with every bit of LSU news so I'm glad it was posted! What a loser!
