If the US Olympic committee would have just named him to the team a few years ago when Sweden offered, like they typically do with the world champions like Biles and Phelps, he would have just won Gold for the U.S. He gave them the option, they told him to go represent Sweden or wait for the trials. He is a professional and made a professional decision, which was obviously the right decision, judging by the results.
