Miles gets the Kansas job which is being reported as likely, What he did to LSU in his negotiations is highly unethical. If he knew he had the Kansas job locked, he just knowingly screwed LSU out of another $1.5 Mil.
Wow.

Actually you are leaving out further contractual obligations-namely this liability has limits and is negated if he receives another job that he apparently wants and must seek and pays him more than the 6.5Mil. over its life
That is conditional on him taking a job. However, what it does not say is how much that school most pay. It only says if Les Gets a contract more than $6.5 million and that school agrees to pay the full $6.5. million. So the only way LSU was not going to pay the $6.5 million is if a A) A school offered Les a Job, B) He took it and C) in the contract, the other school agreed to pay all of the contract worth $6.5 million or more.

or
He could have hung around and collected the whole amount. Both sides win. Not Unethical

Your way of thinking is warped. Rest your brain. It needs it.

Les Miles was going to Kansas NO MATTER WHAT. Les Miles was HIGHLY LIKELY to make more than $6.5mm through the LSU buy out period. LSU has a gain of $5mm...they could of had a gain of $6.5mm. Les Miles worked LSU one last time and I'm happy for him. He didn't deserve what happened to him.
MissiePig:
I like Les as well, always did and still do. We don't know what KU was going to pay as long as LSU owed Miles $6.5. That was always a potential contract impediment. In other words, the mere fact of LSU owing $6.5 million introduced some element of uncertainty into the negotiations. KU offers a contract worth some amount, then how much does KU pay vs. how much can they leverage from LSU. That could be a stickler. You don't think LSU's attorneys would want to look at the KU contract terms.
The fact that Les settled with LSU allows for "efficient contracting" between Les and KU. It eliminates LSU, a third party with economic interest as long as they still owed Les any money.
Win for Les, win for LSU and also KU. What if LSU did not like the terms of Les contract with KU and filed a motion in court. More damn legal fees. Didn't LSU just go through a contract dispute over who owed what when Chavis signed with Texas A&M. My theory, and that is all it is, LSU's attorneys were privy with Les and his negotiations with KU.

I'm agreeing with EVERYTHING your saying, and this point is the X factor that we most likely will never know. I make a series of assumptions that leads to LSU saving $6.5mm. You're assumptions lead you to LSU saving $5mm.
Also one caviat, LSU, from an accounting perspective, isn't technically "gaining" $5mm. The ST/LT liability is going to net with the deferred asset. I'm not actually a gov't accounting expert so someone feel free to correct me.

It is called a negotiated settlement for a reason. Nothing unethical about it.

Government Accounting has its own principles True. My example earlier was using a Publicly traded company as an example. And yes, if a publicly traded company retires long-term debt/liabilities and lower than the book value of that debt, it is recorded as a Gain on the Income statement.
Deferred assets (or liabilities) typically result from differences in tax accounting and book accounting, so not sure what exactly you are getting at here.

Well so much for a buyout clause in future contracts for Coaches that include terms limiting the buyout for the coach that gets hired down the road. According to the logic above they don't effectively work and even limit a coach from negotiating a new deal based on market conditions.

Not sure if anyone has brought this up in response to your hot take, but Miles did not act unethically and your post is terrible.
