The first half of the season, many on here were literally complaining about him playing at all. Questioning Kelly. Questioning Daniels. etc.

No they weren’t. They were wondering why the focal point of our offense was the tight end. It’s clear now that it’s because Daniels struggled to get the ball downfield to our receivers at times, and Mason Taylor was his safety net option. We all know Mason Taylor is really good.

HUDL highlights

That QB does a great job of utilizing his height advantage

First couple minutes of highlights are him high pointing the ball in the endzone

It’s almost like we should trust that the winningest active head coach in college football that has consistently put TE’s in the NFL knows what he is doing.

I prefer not rank him yet among the top TE's in LSU history simply because he has only one season so far. His freshman year was kind of hit or miss. He missed the block on the PAT that cost LSU a chance to win the FSU game. Had a few good moments before having the big game against Bama. Then disappeared because defenses started looking out for him. Finished with a nice bowl game. Pretty much a typical freshman season. I expect him to make a huge improvement next year and a big 3rd year that if he stays healthy may make him the best TE ever at LSU.

what about Brian Kinchen and Mitch Andrews, both good TE's.

my research shows me that 414 yards would put him at 3rd all time for a TE in a single season at LSU.

Any chance we get Arik Gilbert from the portal? He would be a nice complement to Mason...before he transfers again.

Both very good, some may also remember Nicky Savoie. He played TE/H-back in the 90s. Had one year with 7 touches and 3 TDs.

He looks great against guys half his size playing outside receive. He can block/push a smaller guy 15 yards out of bounds. Until he gets on campus and goes up against guys his size, I will reserve crowning him.

No one's crowning anyone. He's 6'6 with a 9 foot wingspan. He's going to be bigger than anyone at the CFB level too. He needs to get some time in the S&C program, but he's got the talent to be very good.

I'm really surprised that Mason Taylor isn't getting any love with Freshman All-American accolades. Highest I've seen is Honorable Mention from College Football News.

Mason Taylor lead all P5 Freshman tight ends in both catches and yards. Meanwhile TEs from North Texas and Ball State are sweeping the lists.

Emory Jones also seems like he's getting slighted regarding Freshman All-American list. He's 3rd team with CFN and the ON3 True Freshman All-American list.

414 yards is third all time? That’s insane how bad our TEs have been. I didn’t realize the bar was so low

I remember more than a dozen or so Rantards saying how awful he was early in the season yada yada and were begging coach BK to put in someone else at that position. When you are a rookie, you will struggle a little early in your career. Hopefully he can continue his greatness and carry it over to next year. His season ranks first for a TE and the Alabama TD catch put him at the top ahead of Moss.

The position kind of died between Dickson’s graduation and the emergence of Foster Moreau in 2017.

These guys were drafted

Lafleuer
Savoie
Royal
Keith Zinger

These guys were workman-like, solid, CFB players.

David Jones
Eric edwards
Richard Dickson

This is a field of study where you have to look at targets & opportunity rather than the hard numbers. Because some of these guys would have been good in modern offenses.

Ok if I’m wrong then who surpassed him? Every other player mentioned in this thread had less than 414 yds in a season other than Moss and Lafleur

True. Gilbert put up similar numbers in half as many games though. It’s a shame that he can’t keep it together.

Malcolm Scott did more in 1981 and in only 11 games.
