NOLA.Com article on LSU's poor fundraising efforts.

Great article. It seems that the LSU foundation needs to allocate more resources toward communication and outreach.

I will send this thread to the foundation's email. I imagine it will serve as useful feedback. If anyone has personal contacts at the foundation, please forward this thread to them.

When LSU doesn't rape people on game day parking, $12 hot dogs and arbitrary fees maybe I'll be inclined to give to the university endowment.

And how is this passed on to potential donors?

It was just released this week and made public...but of course it's not as interesting as FKA's off handed comments on the MSU game, so no media outlet shares it...and gets minimal social media shares as well.

You'll begin to hear more about it later this Fall and into next year.

Like I mentioned, I have never been contacted by LSU about donating. I'm willing to donate. But, if the university is not making me aware of their fundraising plans and goals, it's out of sight out of mind.

You need to make sure the LSU Foundation has your updated contact information. Which if you've never heard from them, they don't have your current information.

I'm not donating money to a University run by F King Alexander. Plain and simple.

also concur that LSU sucks at fundraising. I don't go very long without mailers from my wife's alma mater. I never hear from LSU.

Make sure the LSU Foundation has your current contact information.

High fees/parking fees are a survival mechanism for LSU and are essentially a symptom of a low endowment. If LSU had a healthy endowment, those fees wouldn't be needed.

From a PR standpoint, I would get rid of the high parking fees though. Even though they may be necessary to fill budget shortfalls, I think they hurt psychologically more than paying higher admin fees or something.

I'm a recent alum, someone explain to me how my donations work in endowment. Am I donating a principal that LSU invest and LSU spends the interest?

Yes. You have the gist of it.

In most years, LSU returns something in the neighborhood of 6% to 15% on the endowment.

The returns made from investing the endowment fund certain chairs and professorships, scholarships, and some special programs at LSU.

SO... if LSU invests $1,000,000 and gets a 10% return, then... that's $100,000 for LSU to use to pay professors and give out scholarships.

Endowments are good because they are a perpetual source of funding for the university.

The only down side of it is that you need a good principal to get a good yearly return.

You give to the endowment for the long-term, not the short-term.

Around 2000, my wife and I decided to give at least as much to the LSU Foundation as we donate to TAF. Now, we donate twice as much to the Foundation as to TAF+tradition fees for football and MBB. The Foundation is well-run and efficient. If any of you don't get solicited, it is because the Foundation simply has no contact info for you.

I cannot stand FKA as most LSU faculty were and are opposed to his leadership. He and the other Jindalistas need to be replaced ASAP. But the Foundation is well-run and invests in LSU's academics.

Good post OP. Everyone has their own reasons for giving or not giving, but raising awareness about the Foundation or other LSU giving is never a bad thing.

we alumni need to give back more to the academic side of the University.

LoL...why is that? We paid a nice sum to get an education there. We owe nothing to this school. I'm not donating a penny to LSU other than for football tickets.

Another issue is, who do we donate to? The Alumni Association? The LSU Foundation?

The problem is that you have to call the alumni association as the gatekeeper when you want to donate. You can't call say the School of Business because they will redirect you through the Alumni Association but when you write the check and fill out the paperwork you can specify.

People avoiding contributing directly to the university because F. King Alexander is a jackass who cannot be trusted with the money. Most alumni simply donate to specific departments for specific projects so the money goes where it will actually do some good rather than pay for a 6 figure salary for a dozen unnecessary administrators and deans of diversity.

Endowments are built up over decades. This can't be blamed on F. King.

People in Louisiana do not put their money where their mouth is when it comes to education. Things are viewed as "good enough".

Also, any time the people of Louisiana do give anything, it is wasted through corruption, so who knows how to solve the problem?

Yes. All the Alumni Foundation is good for is throwing parties on game day....and a discount at the hotel on campus
