Lsu’s curious case of not getting hbp

Ive noticed alot this year more of our guys getting out of the way of pitches. So i decided to look into it, and the numbers back it up…..by alot:
HBP by year follower by national ranking at end of may for each year:
2022 116 hpb 2nd nationally
2023 121 hbp 4th nationally
2024 93 hbp 47th nationally
2025 74 hbp 143rd nationally
From 2 years ago that is a huge spike down.
Takeaways:
In 2022 most every starter got hit by at least 7 pitches a year, with guys like morgan, crews, and pearson leading the way.
In 2023 we had like 7 guys get hit by double digit pitches, dugas obviously being the king with 33. But again guys like morgan had 18, thompson with 17, crews with 14.
In 2024 we had pearson with 12, bingham with 11, and travinski with 10, while jones only had 6, milam only had 4 albeit in limited at bats. Milazzo only had 2.
This year, curiel as the leadoff hitter only has 7, jones has 5, milam 3, hernandez 5, braswell 6, stanfield 6, brown only 2. Frey somehow hasnt gotten hit all year, incredible. The leaders are dickinson who is really good at staying in there with 20 and pearson in limited ABs with 14.
So we’ll lose our top 2 after this year. Jones in 3 years has only gotten nicked 12 times, almost remarkable.
Next years team likely features guys like milam, brown, curiel, and maybe stanfield. I dont know if Jay has stopped coaching this, or is just finding players without the mentality to hold their ground, but either the next group of players being brought in needs to include some more of this, and i think we need to get back to instilling it in the returning players

I swear, Dugas must’ve been texting pitchers’ girlfriends before the games as often as he got hit.

The only explanation I have is the pitchers we have faced this year have better control, and may be in part to our hitters moving to avoid being hit, rather than taking one for the team. I'm not suggesting that if a fastball is coming at your head, to just look at it and not move.

Good data Josh. I have noticed this too but love seeing the numbers to back it up. It has to be the set of players we have. Some guys naturally crowd the plate more than others and as you said also have the mentality to tuck and turn while others don’t. It’s crazy though because you’d think our style of play with more speed over power guys that we’d take more cheap HBPs.

Thats the more alarming thing, this style of team has to take more hbp. Its our only shot at going all the way. Also we have to foul off more pitches, but thats for another thread

This may have a little to do with it, but tbh i feel like ive seen curiel and braswell move their legs out of the way of about 10 pitches each over the last couple months

We need that dirtbag mentality back in a big way. Be interested to see the in state vs. out of state player data for this too over the years. Seems like outside of Dickinson, it’s mostly the in state guys that are ball magnets.

A lot has to do with the way pitchers pitch guys, how close they stand to the plate, etc.
Dugas would hang out over the plate with his front elbow, if the pitcher was throwing in, he only has to miss by 6 inches and it’s a hit batter. and to Dugas’ credit, he was not scared to wear it
Jared jones stands off the plate because he wants to get his long arms extended. Plus teams consistently throw him a million sliders away because the book on him is he will chase that pitch
In general, I agree that some of our guys get out of way too often, ESPECIALLY the guys who don’t have a ton of power.

Yeah i have less of a problem with jones doing it and more of a problem with guys like curiel, braswell, and milam doing it

in general I still see players actively holding their ground. I don't think there has been a change in philosophy. I think the fluctuatio more so lies opportunity.

I think the guys don’t crowd the plate as others have in the past. I think it has more to do with hitting style than anything else. We have a bunch more “upright” hitters who need to extend. More pitches on outside also

This is really what I want to see more of. I’d love to see some stats on pitches per plate appearance for some of our hitters. I feel like we were doing a better job of this earlier in the SEC play.

When you can’t hit, the pitcher has no reason to back you off.

They changed the rule before last season

Trying to think how many of our guys wear body armor. Does it seem lower than previous years?
Posted on 5/25/25 at 10:24 am to josh336
This is obviously Les Miles fault

Beau Jordan got hit more than anyone I remember.
