"Why does this current team lack 'beef'?

These are the guys who made it to the roster that year in 2022 as freshmen. This class would be your true juniors for this season.

After a magical 2020 class that featured Dylan Crews, Tre Morgan, Jordan Thompson & Ty Floyd, this is what PM left Coach Jonhson with:

Ok. But baseball at the college level is not exactly like football in that regard.

That core was a train wreck but then again PM had all but given up recruiting from 2018-2021 and handed it off to Cain did a pretty decent job given his experience.

Good juniors(or older) are the backbone of any good football or baseball teams

We lost our Friday and Saturday starter as well as 6 of the top 7 run producers on offense. That is a lot to lose. I was hopeful we would have a couple of guys step up but it has not happened yet. A couple of the guys I was hoping would are sophmores (Neal & Kling) so they may yet turn things around. Braswell and Bingham are showing some promise now.

I am hoping that everything comes together in the next few weeks and they peak right at postseason time. Still lots of baseball to be played.

And you can plug and play transfer portal guys who are juniors more easily because of the nature of the sport.

Transfers are great, but good teams use them supplementally to enhance already strong roster. Much like lsu did last season

Furthermore, the quality of transfer will differ year to year. It’s not a fool proof method to rely on.

Damn seems like Grant Fontenot, Grant Taylor, Blaise Priester, Trip Haddad are doing well at other places, in addition the Pearson and Dutton who are still on the team.

Thankfully the 2020 class was good enough to help carry a championship team

Yep, pretty good display. Not having many juniors or seniors to really put this team up there is dragging us down. If jay had to do it over again, i bet he wouldve grabbed another bat or two in the portal. Think he got a bit overconfident in his ability to coach them up. And i still think theyll be fine in may/june.

Taylor dominated in the fall of 2022 but I think we're getting off subject

Connor Simon was a game changer.

Not recovering from his injury was a huge blow to our current team.

That transition year was a killer. We’re missing some veteran SEC experience which forces a guy like Milam to grow up in a hurry.

Plus Kling is not playing the way JJ thought he would and Neal is struggling after basically missing the whole SEC season last year.

It gave us a couple years in a row of getting effectively zero infielders to campus as freshmen.

This kind of thread is why I like to keep those old lists out there.

This is right on. Those that are downvoting you simply don’t understand the word “Team”. You must have a strong core of players that bought into the program as freshman and grew up together in the program. LSU had that last year with Beloso, Milazzo, Travinski, Dugas, Crews, Morgan, Thompson, and Jobert. Jay supplemented that core with major key pieces Skenes & White.

You simply can’t plug and play a team every year and expect to have a strong team. People over-value transfers. Yes, a couple like Skenes & White can make a huge difference, but they were added to a strong core group that developed together as a team for a few years.
