LSU won the SEC Basketball title on this date in 1985

came down to a regular season finale vs Kentucky at the Assembly Center. This was when the LSU-Kentucky game was one of the biggest games in the country and was nationally televised by NBC. LSU won, 67-61 and with Tennessee's one point win over Georgia, LSU won the SEC outright at 13-5.Also, this was Kentucky coach Joe B. Hall's last regular season game and the loss gave him a 6-7 mark in Baton Rouge. Only two other SEC teams, Tennessee and Alabama had a winning home mark vs him and UK.
Very talented but frustrating and underachieving team. After the infamous loss at home to Georgia on John Williams' attempt at an inbound pass the Tigers won 6 straight SEC game. The two losses were out of conference games to North Carolina (year after Jordan) and Syracuse both on national TV,which was a big deal in 1985.
Unfortunately this would be LSU's last win as the Tigers were in an era (from 1982-1985) where they could not win a tournament game. Auburn beat LSU in Birmingham in the SEC tournament and as a #4 seed in the newly expanded 64 team tourney, #13 Navy destroyed LSU, 78-55 to end the season.
Here is the box score from the Kentucky game to show the amazing talent on that LSU team. LSU 67 Kentucky 61

"Ice Man" Jerry Reynolds was my favorite.

But Nikita Wilson's step back jumper was so sweet.
I remember playing pick up with John Williams in the Field House after the season. The guy was just toying with us jack wagons.

I can't remember an LSU team other than when Pete played that could hit free throws until Will Wade got here.
Had we hit free throws in the game you showed the box score for, it'd have been a blow out.

Circus Vargas!!!
I know he wasn’t a core contributor until the next season but I loved that monster.

Not man LSU fans know how nice of a guy John Williams was. Didn’t have that I am from California feel to him .

I well remember that year. Was a student and will never forget that awful loss to UGA on John Williams pass the length of the court thinking he was running out the clock. Uga gets the inbounds right under their goal and score the winning basket with one second left. I remember leaving the Assembly Center and it was a bone chilling day with sleet on the ramps.

Man those were the days. I was there. I remember PE teacher letting us watch the NCAA game instead of class that day, and david Robinson blew us out. We played uninspired from the tip.

The 80 and 81 teams were pretty good. Ethan Martin was a great point guard and free throw shooter.

Band teacher let me go watch with the PE class because I was the only eighth-grader in the class.

This LSU team is on pace to be the best in modern school history.
Current best is '88-'89 team I believe at 77%. I looked it up the other day.
This team is right on pace for that at 76.9%

God. That play still stings. I remember watching and it seems like it was in slow motion. You could see what was about to happen and couldn’t do anything to stop it.

Best at what?
Is this free throw shooting?
Weird you just threw that out there with no context or prior talk of whatever you're talking about.

That was a very talented team.
John Williams was so fun to watch.

I believe this is the year they had to battle through two weeks of a chicken pox epidemic. Chris Carrier and another football player filled in for depth.
This was before the internet and we would wait for Sid Crocker to intone updated scores from the Tennessee game. The PMAC exploded when he announced the final score and the Vols had lost meaning LSU was the champion. Yes, fans in the PMAC actually paid attention and the place was the Deaf Dome.
Joe B was probably 3-7 for his last ten games in the PMAC as most wins came in the mid seventies when Dale was building the Fantastic Climb to the Top.

Whatever happened to Williams?

Played several years in the NBA with Washington and the Clippers. He was a good pro player but his weight issues eventually curtailed his career. he had great all around skills for a player his size. Sort of a bulkier and less fluid Ben Simmons but still a great all around player.
He had a hand infection which hampered him in the 1986 Final Four. He told Dale he was coming back for his junior year but then changed his mind and declared for the draft. First major early departure for LSU basketball. The Astronaut left early in 1980 but at least he played three years.
One more season especially if he was a big part of the 1987 team which narrowly missed another Final Four could have resulted in another jersey hanging in the rafters.

quote:nope - the chickenpox year was the following season- 1986 when they went on that miraculous final 4 run, the 85 season was a total dud after winning the sec reg season title.

I would make an argument that this was LSU's deepest most talented team ever. There were better teams as far as production, and an argument could be made that this team underachieved given that depth of talent. I mean I know that Navy team had Robinson but little else and they beat us by 23...terrible.
