Mulkey said in the post-game interview it was because of the matchups vs Kent St. for Reese. Kent State wanted to shoot 3's which took Reese away from the basket and she was not guarding the 3 well.

There was a bit of a fuss last year when Angel was not a finalist for a National POY award, I heard it was because her GPA wasn’t at the minimum standard for the award. This is not good if her grades are truthfully in the gutter.
