In football???

It’s not a ‘rivalry’ if Bama wins every year.

The SEC’s greatest rivalry is Alabama-Auburn and it isn’t remotely close

Tailgated once with several Bammer football alums where this very subject was discussed. To a man they agreed that Little Brother was their biggest rival but they always dreaded playing LSU for a variety of reasons. They said it was usually their toughest game.

Saban knows LSU is his biggest threat. Most years and long term. He recruits against us the most and outs all hands on deck for the game. It has been a one sided rivalry no doubt but there is no bigger game

Since 2005, yes

Even with the lopsided record due to bad fortune (2012 and 2014) and mulligan NC loss.

It's been THE game pretty much yearly and it's not debatable

It’s not competitive as far as win/loss records, which I understand are what matter most, but people tend to forget the majority of LSU losses since Saban arrived to Bama have been very competitive and coming down to the last minutes.

2008: 27-21 Overtime Loss

2009: 24-15 Patrick Peterson Interception Game (need I say more?)

2012: 21-17 TJ Yeldon breaks our hearts and Craig Lostons Ankles

2013: If that bone head Copeland doesn’t fumble the sure TD in the end zone who knows what could’ve happened.

2014: 20-13 Overtime Loss (maybe most heartbreaking of all) Lsu Recovers fumble, tie game 1st and goal 1:13 remain. An Alexander dumb penalty, Domingue kickoff out of bounds, and a questionable catch by Christian Jones later, forces OT and LSU loses.

2016: 10-0 Was a tie game going into the 4th and a one score game with under 3min left in the game.

it's not a great rivalry. Yes, over the past 15 years the game has been very important, with national implications. But it's not a decades-old, deep hate rivalry.

Bama won 16 of 18 games from 1964-81. The 80s and 90s were split, but neither team was great on the national stage.

The real importance of the game started when Saban got to Alabama in 2007, but Bama has won 9 of the last 10.

So it's not nearly the SEC's greatest rivalry. Lately, it's a huge game, no doubt, but a rivalry is so much more than that.

Yes. It’s not historically the best rivalry. But recently it has been one of the most viewed football games year in and year out, across the nation. More so than almost any other rivalry game in the country.
The winner almost always finds their way to the SEC championship game, wins, and then ends up playing for the natty.
May not be the greatest historically, but it’s definitely proven to be one of the biggest games every year for the past 10-15 years.

Well from 1995-2003 or so Tennessee vs Florida was billed as the most watched game in September for college football.

Those 2 were a rival and some maybe still consider it one, but it’s been lopsided for years now.

Everything is cyclical.

I have tons of friends that went there, my daughter and sons friends go there, my step dad is buddies with Saban, and my father admired and loved Coach Bryant and drank whiskey and played cards with him. Some of my neighbors kids played there.

I hate Bama in football more than anything on this planet

agreed, but "toughest game" doesn't necessarily mean it's a rivalry.

Look back at previous schedules. LSU would take their bye before the Alabama game.

Rivalry can't be one sided 90% of the time. Auburn vs Bama is a true, grit rivalry for decades. LSU vs Bama games are good every so often but, LSU is up and down.

LSU/Florida is a better rivalry than LSU/Alabama.

People like to play up the rivalry because often when they play there's a lot at stake.

So is Ohio State and Michigan no longer a rivalry? All those years in a row Navy beat Army, was it not a rivalry then?

Someone says this anytime someone brings up the word "rivalry" and it's simply not true.

I guess you could fiddle around with numbers, and call it a great rivalry...

I mean, LSU has won 3 national titles since 2000 and played for a 4th. They beat Alabama in the regular season every time they played for the title.
Alabama has 6 titles in that period, beat LSU regular season in 5, and had to beat LSU in a rematch for the 6th.
That's 9 titles in 2 decades, almost every other year.

That makes it a nationally significant game, ... but not necessarily a good rivalry. LSU just hasn't been competitive enough in it to call it that.

LSU-Florida is a better example. Series is very close overall, games tend to mean something for the conference standings, and always tons of emotions and a lot of big plays. Underdog wins a lot, you can basically toss the records out going into the game.
