The reverse angle on this photo showed a big handful of white jersey FWIW. I lost the photo thanks to Hurricane Rita.

That truly sucked. To go from 9-1 to "nevermind" was a pathetic move by the bowl community
I agree
Here is what happened for those who are unaware.
quote:
In 1969, LSU was 9-1 and ranked fifth, but when the Cotton Bowl Classic denied the Tigers a matchup with top-ranked and undefeated Texas, LSU players refused invitations by the Bluebonnet Bowl and Liberty Bowl, instead opting to stay home. Tiger fans suspected the culprit for the Cotton Bowl Classic snub was the decision by Notre Dame to lift its self-imposed bowl ban and participate in post-season play for the first time since 1925. When the Irish opted to return to the bowl scene, the Cotton Bowl Classic snapped up Notre Dame. The seething antipathy between LSU and Notre Dame boiled over into a two-year series between the schools in 1970 and 1971, in which the home team won each game (Notre Dame in 1970, LSU in 1971).

that game was the most dissappointing experience of my life as a LSU fan.
You weren't in Oxford last week...although the Cap1 is a close second.

It would have been a bigger travesty had they called holding on that play imo.
I was at the game and I agree - as much as I would've wanted it, it was a good no call.

I was actually living in Iowa at the time and literally almost cried in the stands after that play. I never heard the end of it from the Iowa fans adn to this day they still call that play "the catch". They sell posters of "the catch" and I swear every Iowa fan has one up on their walls.

there was no timeout. that was part of the problem, weird clock mgmt at the end.
+1000
It turned out well for the Hawkeyes, but was very "Miles in Oxford". I couldn't believe how poorly they managed the clock.

It's fairly ridiculous when a last second win at the Capital One bowl is deserving of that kind of celebration.

I remember that whole thing vividly. Marcus Randall getting the start - ineffective. Flynn comes in - ineffective. JaMarcus comes in - awesome. Great late comeback. The people I was with were all going crazy, but I looked at the clock and was thinking "uh oh". Then, with all the bad clock management, I started feeling better.
Most people around me weren't even watching the play as it was unfolding. They were too busy basking in the glory of victory (a la Kentucky 2002). I was watching. I screamed, "Oh no!", as I saw the coverage. My wife stopped and looked, "What??"
We both sat there with our jaws open for about a minute. It's a good thing we were in the upper deck or we could've been "those fans" that end up on national TV in the agony of defeat. Iowa fans would've had us in their sig pictures, etc.

Dude, come on. The Bluegrass Miracle was a mid-season game against Kentucky and it's a permanent fixture in LSU lore. Iowa had a similar moment against the defending national champions in a fairly major bowl. It's the stuff we all love about college football. It was just us on the receiving end of it.

I would seriously WTF if I visited a LSU fan's house and the poster he had up was from the Bluegrass Miracle or beating Illinois in the 2001 Sugar Bowl

I totally agree with this. Iowa totally misplayed the clock at the end of the game. I truly think that LSU thought Iowa was going to call a TO before they snapped the ball. That confusion led to the blown coverage. Had that play not happened, Ferentz would have had a lot of questions to answer as they only needed about another 20 yards to get in FG range to win the game with about 25 seconds left.

I see the "93 dash berlin" posters all the time

I don't understand why
Now maybe a picture of the guy in a cowsuit? That's funny even tho the game was pretty irrelevant

The "bowl community" made plenty of offers to LSU that year (at least three that I know of)--LSU just declined the offers. While I agree that LSU deserved to go to the Cotton Bowl that year, I think that LSU should have gone ahead and taken one of the other offers and finished with a double-digit win total.

Well, I'll agree with you there, unless it is with a bunch of other stuff too.
I remember when I went to the Vandy game in Nashville several years ago. They had a big halftime whoop-de-do about the 1950-something Hall of Fame Bowl team ... that apparently didn't even win.

I never saw any flags. I was looking for them.

I remember hearing "people" say that Prude broke coverage on purpose and was laughing at the end of the game ... so said it was to "get back at" the coach at that time ... ???
