re: LSU to charge for on campus parking in 2011

Here is something to contemplate:
Q:Why do some bars and clubs charge a cover to get in through the front door?
A:1) Because the market will support it (supply and demand). 2) To keep freeloaders, solicitors, and drifters out of their establishment.
I think the tailgating experience would be a lot better if you prevented everyone that couldn't at least cough up $5-$10 to the University from being there.
If anything this move increases the secondary market value of season ticket holders that already invest in parking passes. There is now a fixed price on the substitute option (it helps set the market). Just look at the Ticket Exchange board to see how many loyal posters are brokering Parking Passes every week.

This is the type of economic approach I can relate to.

I get the economics behind it, trust me.
And it wouldn't bother me if LSU had a succinct plant to execute this but it is clear they do not and have not considered the effects it has on those for which the University has always prided itself on its tailgating atmosphere.

I've read your posts in the past I know you've thought about it. And look, I do agree that LSU has a disconnect with some of the tailgating issues. I remember having to deal with that shite back in the day with the generators.

Yea, my biggest complaint is they don't really understand how some groups do this. For instance here's how a typical Friday/Saturday works for us:
Friday:
- Tents setup at noon
- One member puts their car out there at 4:30
- My truck is loaded with most of the supplies
- Another truck is loaded with the ice chests
Saturday:
- My spot is swapped out in the saved spot
- Ice chest delivery is made and they go park in a nearby empty spot
- Spouses, etc. arrive later based on their schedules.
We will obviously keep one car out there at the $40/spot rate, but according to the release, the ice chests cannot even be dropped off to the spot.
Other schools allow for drop off zones near heavy tailgating areas.

Well y'all seem to really have it down. Better than our tailgate, which is a cluster frick of 20 somethings trying to get their shite together.

Yea, essentially we aren't looking forward to hauling shite from behind the Law Center all the way across the Parade Ground.
And its pretty succinct and organized for big games given the lack of parking. But you could park in the T. Boyd lot until about 4pm this past Saturday. We had people strolling in whenever they felt like it. I imagine that will change for the Monroe-type games and most will show up less than 3 hours before gametime.

hold on,
whats the ice chest rule?

There isn't one. We just don't have room for them in my truck and the ice machine place is easier for someone else to get to.
But we aren't going to pay for a second spot for each game at $40 just to unload 3 ice chests. And it wouldn't be an issue but it appears that LSU will not be offering loading/unloading zones in heavy tailgate areas.

where do you park your trailer?
I have 2 trailers! I bring one on friday eve, unload it, go home pickup 2nd trailer, pickup kegs,etc....
I park 100 yds away at 6am on gameday and unlock the tv and speaker system from the trailer and get the party started.
I'm going to reduce to 1 trailer now and will figure something out with parking at 6am.

where you stayin in little rock next week?

parking elsewhere
Will be very difficult to do because the free spots are going to fill up real fast once this goes into effect.
quote:
taking a bus from a designated location
I know LSU offers this, but will the bus be there to pick me up at 8AM and bring me back after the game? Will the bus be able to handle thousands of people who do the same thing?
quote:
taking a cab from a designated location
Where do I catch said cab after the game to get back to my car? Parking on campus for $40 would probably cost just as much as this would.
quote:
carpooling and splitting the costs
Most reasonable option, but this doesn't help groups who normally have multiple vehicles filled with tailgating supplies or those who need to park one car on Friday to save a spot, then get back to campus on Saturday.

Are you aware LSU and Nebraska are the only 2 schools in the country that are self sufficient, receive no state funding, and give back millions to the university?

That is absolutely not true, it is an optional fee. Please note the "optional fees" at the bottom of this page includes the Longhorn All-Sports Package, a.k.a. "student athletics fee."
It is still a fee derived from students which is not done at LSU or Nebraska.
They receive not a single dollar from any university account or payment.

You continue to be wrong.
LINK
You are implying that LSU students get into games for free, which is not true.

athletics is a self-supporting UT auxiliary and receives no state funds. Ticket sales, television revenue, and advertising income account for less than 50% of needed operating funds for UT Athletics. Private support is very important in order to sustain the future of the 20-sport men's and women's programs.
