LSU swimming team? Another sport you’d like to see develop?

Just in a quick glance, looks like the men’s swimming team started in 1936 and finished 3rd in the SEC, then about a 20 year gap, then had a 1988 SEC Championship.

Globally, the sport is growing and brings in elite athletes. I wonder if it’s our facilities, lack of interest in the swimming community, etc. One would think that since we can draw the greatest athletes in America to play for our sports institutions, we should be able to start growing other sports teams to compete equally well.

The more LSU is said globally, the better....alls I’m trying to say. What’s another sport you think LSU could develop and grow to successfully compete in?

At this point it would have to be a world class facility. The Texas school are really really good at swimming and the Louisiana development teams are not nearly as good as the rest of the nation. They have a great freshman, but their problem will be getting a deep enough team to fill out the roster to really make some noise. A guys team typically has 20-30 guys. You need 18 that are good enough to score at SECs, and there are only 9.9 scholarships. Other schools are able to bank on in state talent staying home for cheap, LSU just doesn’t have enough in state talent unfortunately.

With a great pool, LSUs brand name, and getting good international pipelines set up, there is a future where LSU could make something happen but it’s a stars aligning thing.

LSU badly needs a new natatorium. LSU swimming and diving facilities are the worst in the SEC. Going to have to be addressed by Woodward or just discontinue the sport

I don’t know who the coach is but I bet he/she is the Les Miles of swimming and the game has passed him/her by.

they tried when the new lsu pool /rec was being built.
build something that could be used for students snd athletes.

but big egos step in .. so we ended up with a world class lazy river instead of a new facility for students and athletes.

pools are a lot to maintain and keep state of the art. we are so far behind it is hard to justify keeping the program going.

The Natatorium is approaching 40 yrs old and the locker rooms / bathrooms were never finished according to plan back in 1985. I participated in AAU swimming in the early 80’s (even swam at the HP Long pool), and my kids did the same from 2010-2017. I’ve been to a half dozen college swimming facilities and LSU is easily the worst. Upgrades have to be made if LSU wants to compete against the top programs.

Not just an upgrade, a whole new facility. Most of the SEC schools have some kind of natatorim

We have a Natatorium; however, it’s a 1985 Chrysler K-car with an 8-track radio that’s beyond outdated. I concur, bulldoze the current facility and build from scratch. I honestly don’t see that happening unless the State and University somehow finds $50M. LSU doesn’t have the luxury of donations from Sam Walton (ARK) or Texas oil royalties (A&M).

LSU collects nearly 50 million dollars a year in SEC money. Maybe spend a little there for a 20 million dollar natatorium

Personally I want Canes to start throwing a shitload of money at cross country so we can have a battle of the chicken kingdoms with Tyson and Arkansas.

The facilities were really bad when I was a kid competing in Louisiana. The in-state development programs are lackluster compared to Texas and even Oklahoma. I don’t think LSU swimming being a power is feasible without dumping more money into it than it’s really worth. If there’s a place to start though it would definitely be facility upgrades. LSU would need to build a natatorium like Mizzou’s (imo the best in the SEC) to start to compete

Let me see if i can touch on what has been said here:

Dave (the coach) is not a “Les Miles”. However, he is not a very good coach. Well, he is a decent coach, but is not good at recruiting. No personality/effort put into recruiting.

The real problem is what has been stated in this thread already...the facility is by far the worst in the SEC. the problem with building something from scratch is that it becomes a money pit. There is very limited income potential with a facility that is a competition pool only. The majority of facilities that make it work are the ones that have different money making facilities joined to the pool. In my opinion, LSU missed the chance when a competition pool was not built along with the new rec facility.

LSU will also have an international draw for athletes. Always has, always will. I swam at LSU with people from England, Sweden, Germany, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. That is jut off of the top of my head. A new facility would not only help with international recruiting, but also domestic recruiting.

My $.02.

They need some of their Millionaire alums who are now professional swimmers to contribute some cash for a new facility...oh wait...nevermind.

The LSU Natatorium is a really shitty facility.

A new one needs to be built.
