What was Feists status last season? Didnt he redshirt?

From watching last years film, Welter's biggest liability was his all around speed. Is there anyway he can improve on that during his 5th off season? I hope so because it seems like Chief is sold on his abilities. I personally believe there is too much LB talent on this squad for Welter to get any more than 30% of the playing time.
I don't buy the field general argument... SEC speed is tops in the country. We should plan accordingly.

Well then it's a good thing that Chavis' defense at LSU has an average rank of 13th in total defense in the country. Sounds like just the guy to plan defensive schemes and personnel accordingly.

First of all I'm not DJ Welter's brother, dad, uncle, or gay admirer.
But the guy gives 100% effort on every play, that much is obvious. Second of all, if any of you have seen/heard/read interviews he's given, he is a true tiger and bleeds P&G.
I agree that Fiest is probably more talented, but DJW is probably the most unfairly criticized player I can remember. Go watch some film of Karnell Hatcher and Stefon Francois to remind yourself what truly bad linebackers look like. As far as I'm concerned, DJ has yet to KO his own teammate allowing the other team to score from their own 30 on the last play of a half.
And concerning Beckwith:
is true. Also, does it bother anyone else that he shoved Connor Neighbors 5 yards into the end zone after losing him in coverage, managing to get an unsportsmanlike penalty in a scrimmage?

a) CN wasn't his responsibility
b) shove in practice doesn't bother me at all

In Welter's defense, he played better v. Iowa in the bowl game. BUT he still has a penchant for taking himself out of plays/failing to shed blocks.
In watching the spring game, he badly missed a tackle that led to a 15 yard gain for #47. See the first two plays of this video LINK
They are somewhat similar plays. Watch how Kwon plays it, then watch how Welter does.
ETA: Kwon may have been on a blitz or responsible for chipping #47 at the line, so it may not have been entirely Welter's fault. But a missed tackle is a missed tackle. Makes for an interesting discussion at least

Welter is terrible. It doesn't matter that he gives 100% effort or that he is a true tiger. THat is what he is suppossed to do/be. He's also suppossed to play well, and he doesn't. Just watch the film. His coverage skills aren't good because he is slow. My main concern with him is on running plays. He gets blocked almost every single time.

Danny McCray caught a lot of shite on here as well. Same stuff people say about Welter. He's going on 5 years in the League, and not just as a special teamer.
Point is, there's a lot of wanna-be amateur scouts on here that talk about "studying the tape" and "watching film," but they don't know nearly as much as they think they do.
I'm not saying Welter is a great player, or that he's going to have a career of any length playing in the NFL. What I am saying is that the guys who get paid to evaluate the talent at LSU, and who get paid to decide who plays, think that he was the best option at MLB last season. And may continue to think that this season.

People get paid a lot of money for all sorts of things. It doesn't mean anything. It doesn't matter if he's the best option. Him being the best option is just as bad as if they thought he was the best option. He's not an SEC caliber player. He looks worse than some kids in high school right now. It is embarrasing.

The reality is that if Hunter and Rasco put anywhere near the pressure Mingo and Montgomery did, if the DTs were as stout in 2013 as they were in 2012 and if there weren't as many beakdowns in the secondary as there were last season, Welter's play would have really been unnoticed. Even Lotson struggled in a number of games.
If anyone can name 5 defensive starters that played well the ENTIRE season I'd love to hear it.

Debo is 6'2. And will gain weight this offseason. Already looks like he has. He will be up to 215lbs. Look at LaVonte David for the Bucs. Hes 6'1 220lbs in the NFL. And is 1 of the best LBs in the game.
If you can play, size doesnt matter. Debo can play. Speed kills, and Debo def has the speed and is a viscous hitter. Gonna blow up this year.
In your opinion, why do you think he hasn't played much thus far?

I agree that are DL wasnt as good as recently. But, Minter played with Freak and Ego at DTs. And he did great. Barrow and Kwon still played at a high level too. I get that they are diff positions than Welter, but if our DL was as bad as everyone thought they were, all the LBs would have been bad. And when Lamar Louis got in the games at MLB, he stood out and looked fine.
We were 3rd in the SEC against the run, and 3rd in overall D. Our D, and DL, was solid. Not great. But solid. Did Anthony Johnson live up to the hype surrounding him when he was a freshman? No. Was he still a solid SEC DL? Yes. Same with Ego.
Welter just isnt a good player. Is he the worst LB ever in LSU history? No. Hes not as bad as people make him out to be. But he still is bad.

It generally means that they're good at what they do. Chavis' record speaks for itself. It doesn't mean he's beyond reproach, but it definitely means he's more qualified than anyone here.

Well, as he's a starter on an SEC team, he must be SEC caliber.

Maybe, that's an unverifiable statement. And nine of those kids are playing the level of competition Welter is so it's a pointless statement.
I have a hard time understanding how LSU has the 3rd best defense in the conference, while our second leading tackler isn't good enough to play on that defense.

excited to hear feist is coming along now.

I have a hard time understanding that Auburn went 9th and 12th respectively and played for a National Championship? Go watch film, but I'm certain you won't recognize what you're looking at. He only had 25 solo tackles all season. That's less than 2 per game. Not going to cut it for a MLB.

Yea he def bulked up for the combine and the NFL. Didnt realize he got above 230lbs. At Nebraska, he was playing at 220lbs, or smaller. And still played at a very high level. The year he set Nebraska's single season tackling record he was 6'1 210lbs. That is who Debo reminds me of. Undersized, but as athletic as you can get at the LB spot and a ball hawk.
And moneyg, he hasnt been a starter yet because of Barrow and Kwon. And Kwon was more ready to play as a freshman than Debo was.
Hes an OLB. OLB has been set since Debo got here. This is the 1st time that a starting OLB spot has opened up. But its not like he hasnt played at all. Hes been a great special teams player, and gets some series on D. And when he was in, he made plays.

not just that, but he's a starter on an elite SEC team.
but i'm sure everyone else is right that he's not good.

Placing 3rd in the SEC West two years in a row is not elite. Neither is 14th in the nation total defense.
