Hopefully this means no more loose turf like during the Auburn game this past year.

Agreed. They do say this every time they spend a lot of money on the field. Who knows, maybe this time it’ll actually be true. We had the worst field in college football last year.

The drainage of the field was perfectly fine the first couple of years. But over time it breaks down and needs to be fixed. That’s just simple turf management knowledge.

BS I recall we had a biblical rain like the first or second game after the field update and the playing conditions were terrible.

at the time they blamed it on still 'dialing it in' but it only got worse.

Its downright pathetic that an Ag school cannot get plush grass to grow in TS. Look at Miss State- crappy school and program and their field is immaculate. Same for their baseball and we always have brown patches everywhere. No excuse for that.

MS State has always had the best grass surface imo.

I think State has the best turf management program in the country.

The guy talked about them replacing just the turf in the past but now they went deeper than they usually do and will check things liking piping etc.

Tiger Stadium’s biggest issue is lack of sun. This gets really bad late in the season.

State doesn’t have that issue because their stadium is much smaller (doesn’t block the sun). Do people honestly believe that State has some secret grass growing technique that nobody knows about?

It's not the two inch rain that's the problem.

Once again blame that BS Bayou Super Fest nonsense, combined with a less than stellar crew of turf workers that definitely ARE NOT amongst the elite of college grass specialists.

Hire an experienced Turf Grad of Mississippi State and all the grass problems will magically vanish.

BTW, the turf will never properly root if they keep replacing the entire field every season because of that music festival. It takes several years to develop a strong turf root system and that will never happen if they rip it all out every year. Doesn't matter how good the drainage or anything else is, if the root system is weak, there will be problems.

Seriously, Scott Woodward needs to put a final nail in the coffin of the festival. There are many other suitable venues. Let them go elsewhere.......

I understood that the size of our stadium and steepness of the seating makes growing grass a challenge (shade).

The super fest has nothing to do with the field conditions. Three months is plenty of time to have the field ready to go for the season as it always is. As for the staff they are more than qualified with experience and education. The science of managing turf isn't different in Mississippi, so hiring a MSU grad will not change the fact that the field does not get enough sun light in the late summer and fall months. Tiger stadium has many challenges that are being managed by experts in the turf industry. The latest technologies and management practices in turf management are being utilized I can assure you. With that said I have no doubt the drainage and playability will improve with this renovation. In years past all they've done is amended the upper profile due to lack of resources or choosing to go cheap, and a few years back they even ran into unmarked campus utilities under the playing surface. Apparently they have figured out the utility problem and they are able to do a more extensive profile renovation now. Coring out 18 inches should allow them to properly construct the field to drain properly. There are also systems that can be connected to the drainage lines to blow air through the profile to dry it out very quickly similar to what is used on golf courses like Augusta. I'm not sure of the turf variety they will install, but I'd hope it's not celebration which is what has been installed the last few times. There are newer better performing varieties on the market now that offer better shade and cold tolerance and require less cultural practices. That's just my two cents. In the future I'd respectfully ask to not take shots at the staff that manage the fields. I do not know them personally but I am in the turf industry and I take offense when I see my peers attacked especially when the information isn't accurate.
