OF Jared Mitchell (first round)

wow

scouts wet their pants at the thought of a "five tool" player. I think they think any athletic black player that plays OF they try and lump into this category, the fact that he plays football, which only gets mentioned every at 5 seconds, makes it even worse.

Damn, I knew we were on the upswing after kicking everyone's arse last year up to the CWS, but I don't recall ever seeing us pre-season #1....

That's all true about the media, but I doubt a scout will take a chance on a player because he's black and plays football.

The media, however, will overhype a player because he plays football.

While I am all for this, there is no reason UNC shouldn't be pre-season No. 1. Their pitching is sick. Plus they beat LSU twice last year in Omaha.

I was expecting North Carolina to be #1. There's only one point separating the two teams, though.

what wont? the #1 ranking. i actually agree but you dont sound bitter at all.

i'm not bitter at all. i'm sure LSU will be great and will return to the CWS, i just don't think they're going to be the best team in the country. just my opinion

Blake Dean was on the radio the other day and he said the same thing. That Neon Leon came in the fall absolutely murdering the ball. I saw him in the first fall scrimmage and he took the first pitch of the first at bat of the first inning and put it 3/4 of the way up the centerfield wall for a triple.

I'm basically expecting him to be Willie Mayes Hayes from Major League II.

That would be great!

But lets be honest, the outfield (Landry,Mitchell,Helenihi), particularly towards the end of the season, was dog shite at the plate. But what could you do? Collectively they formed possibly the best fielding outfield in LSU Baseball history, and the reluctance to shake-up the lineup, imo, possibly cost the Tigers one heck of a housewarming gift for the new Box.

PS, Here's a little baseball trivia.

What do 1929 Cleveland Indians teammates,Bibb Falk and Joe Sewell have in common.

Hint: It's college baseball related.

that article was throwing around 1st and 2nd round grades pretty loosely. I know some was PM, but still.

Mitchell needs a huge year to be a 1st round pick. And needs to improve his defense tremendously

4 other SEC teams in the top 25 and we play all 4. Should be interesting.

Also..what ever happened to South Carolina?

Both were in the '07 class of the College Baseball HOF.

Is it anything deeper than that?

Actually both are honored with half the namesake of college baseball stadiums. Disch-Falk at Texas and Sewell-Thomas at Alabama.

Nice, good stuff. Did Sewell just coach at Bama or did he play there as well?

Coached there from 1964 to 1970.
Incredibly he struckout just 114 times in 7132 at-bats. Still a MLB record.

While at Alabama, he also played football. All 5'6" 155 lbs of'em
