This was a group that had a lot of question marks coming into the season. In the early going, I feel that they have performed well albeit against lesser competition. They've also had to deal with some pretty horrendous fielding behind them.

Starters

Money - He's been lights out so far. Locating the fastball well and he's shown that he can throw the breaking ball for strikes. Love his attitude on the mound. If he can continue to have success with his secondary pitches, I think we are going to be in good shape for Friday nights. Really looking forward to seeing him compete vs. OU on Friday.

Hilliard - We know what he is at this point. A solid SEC starter that can be dominant at times when he has everything working. Should be in the rotation all year although I would not mind seeing him moved into the Sunday spot at some point if possible.

Floyd - The stats would tell you he has been very good. And he has been. However, I am most concerned about him out of our starters thus far. His fastball is tremendous. Low 90's with some life to it. The teams we've played so far have not been able to catch up to it. He has not shown the ability to throw a secondary pitch at all. I can't see this approach working against the SEC or the better competition we'll see this weekend. Until he develops some secondary pitches, he may be better served as a middle reliever. But who should get a shot to replace him?

Relievers w/ a chance to move into the rotation

Fontenot - Many thought that he would start the year as a starter. He's looked great in limited action so far. He's a veteran presence. Great fastball and a solid breaking pitch. I would think he gets the first look if we change up the rotation.

Cooper - I think he has looked decent. There was a lot of excitement surrounding him coming into the season and its easy to see why at times. He got a bad shake against Tech with the fielding he had behind him. He probably sticks in middle relief.

Taylor - To me, he has been the most impressive pitcher other than Money so far. He is a presence on the mound. Mid 90's fastball with what appears to be a good breaking ball. I'd love to see him get a midweek start to try and extend. He could dark horse to slide into the rotation. If nothing else, he's going to be an important piece of our bullpen.

Hellmers - Looks about like he did last year. All business. Quick worker. He probably sticks in long relief/midweek.

Late Game Relief

Reyzelman - Has been electric with the fastball when he's gotten in. Seems like he may be the guy to close out games. I'd add Fontenot to that mix as well if he doesn't get moved into the rotation

Gervase - As advertised. He's been very solid so far and was throwing a nice breaking ball last night. Probably your setup guy.

Others

Coleman - Would have included him in the guys that have potential to move into the rotation but with the uncertainty around the injury, I'm not so sure. He has some of my favorite stuff on the team. I think he's a starter long-term but I don't know if they'll ask him to extend like that this season post-injury. That's if he comes back at all. Hoping for the best but the silence about it is concerning.

Collins - I've been impressed by him so far. Solid stuff. I think he can be a contributor.

Edwards - Another guy who we kind of know who he is. I think he'll be around to take over for a struggling starter and go 2-4 innings throughout the year.

Bottom line, I think this is actually an above average group collectively. There's no Nola, Gausman, etc. But I think you have a lot of good talent and a deeper group than we've seen in several years. I think all 12 of the guys listed above could be trusted to take the ball at some point in a meaningful game. I'm encouraged so far. Hoping they keep it up in Houston this weekend.

Taylor is the most intriguing to me of the group, guy who could really come as the season progresses.

I hope Hilliard saved a good start for this weekend, this is when we'll need it most.

If we could just find someone to be a Saturday starter and move Hilliard to Sunday I would feel really good about our pitching.

Good post. Dutton looked like a good arm, too.

This one hurts. Agree with your last point as well - the fact that we haven't even heard a timetable makes me think he's not gonna be back this year. Hope I'm wrong. Could really use him

Liked what I saw from Taylor last night. I am a bit worried about Hilliard facing Texas, but I'm not sure I'd change the rotation.. see how he does. Think they said that's what Jay is doing anyway - keeping the rotation the same this weekend.

They were waiting on the results of the scan, as of last night. I think we'll hear something today, if Jay wants us to know.

I definitely want to see more from Dutton.

Still want to see more of Lansville as well. I'm curious as to why he had 1 appearance and then never got the ball again. I know that 1 appearance did not go well but it was his first time as a freshman and he looked good in scrimmages prior to the season. Seems like that 1 bad outing as a first time on the mound wouldn't kill his chances.

I will have a better opinion of Floyd as a starter after this weekend. Need to see him mix it up and be able to get his secondary pitches close the the zone.

I'd be interested to see Taylor extend. See if he can keep control and velocity up after 50 or so pitches.

I know Collins is coming off TJ but he is someone else I wonder if they would consider extending.

Also, I usually keep up with pretty much everything LSU baseball, but did I miss an injury or something with Grant Fontenot? Was expecting to see him make at least 1 appearance by now.

I think Taylor is the key here. If we can extend him to 5-6 innings, I think you can throw him Saturday and Hilliard on Sunday.

Floyd will pitch against Baylor this weekend. Although it will be a step up in talent from what he's faced so far, their offense has been bad. Batting .240 as a team. 2 home runs. He may be able to get by with the fastball again but we'll see.

I think we need to get a look at Taylor starting in the midweek. Floyd certainly has experience over him but he or Fontenot probably project better for SEC Play

Ideally, I'd like to see:
Fri - Money
Sat - Fontenot / Taylor
Sun - Hilliard

SU - Gervase
Closer - Reyzelman / Fontenot

Bingo. It can't be Cooper or Hellmers or any other pitch to contact thrower with no real wipeout pitch given the shaky start to our defense.

That's 2 dominant showings by Taylor plus CJJ says he's got the mental toughness. I say pencil him in on Sat. Leave Fontenot in the pen with Rezeldude.

Both dominant showings were 2 innings each. They will have to see him extend a little more before putting him on a Saturday.

I'm not saying that he won't end up being the Saturday guy. Definitely has the stuff for it. Just saying it won't be an overnight deal and throw him out there. You will likely see him start a midweek or if someone is in trouble this weekend early maybe they put him in and see how long they can ride him. Then that can bring him into play for a weekend starter spot.

Correct. As I said in the OP.

I want him to be the Saturday guy, but I completely agree he needs some more time out on the mound. Hopefully, he can get some extended innings in one of the games this weekend. I'd like to see him go 3 innings in maybe the OU game or start a midweek game.

I seriously doubt Taylor will throw again tomorrow. In fact, I don't think we'll see him again until Sunday.

You can have guys that you use multiple times per week but his style is not built for that, epecially just a few days apart. He's at you 101% on every pitch. After 30 pitches or 300 pitches, he needs a recovery window.

Tomorrow's plan is likely to ride Money as far as we go then go to Fontenot.

Yes, my mistake I had the schedule backwards in my head thinking OU was our Sunday game.

I don’t think the weekend is set at all

Money has been really good, still more of a SP2 or SP3 to me. But if he has to be the Friday guy I think LSU can win with them.

LSU bullpen arms are better than the starters. So I’m wondering who can step up and maybe move into the rotation. I think Floyd is more of a pen guy.

But would love to see Reyzelman moved into a starter role. And I hope Coleman can come back from inury. These are the type of dynamic arms you need to win it all.

Still, however, if LSU’s offense is as good as it should be, they may be able to use the MLB model, get 5ip from a starter & put it all on the pen. I think the pen is that deep if they leave it alone.

It's no secret that LSU doesn't have a definitive weekend rotation. I may be in the minority, but I still like Fontenot as a potential starter. I would like to see him play a Jared Bradford type role. If he's needed early Friday or Saturday then use him for multiple innings and ride him as long as you can. If not, then start him on Sunday. I just don't like our most experienced pitcher being limited to one or two innings on the weekend.
