Why are fan expectations so split on this board every year? There seems to rarely be a consensus. There’s the 15-0 faction, the 10-2 faction and the 8-4/9-3 faction.

Seldom do you see realistic expectations.
15-0 are almost always dreamers. But with the experience and talent LSU brought in plus the prospect of Brennan being healthy, 10 wins seems to be a good target no matter how good BK is. The guys calling for 8 or less wins are trying to downplay expectations for their new coach.

Just looking at a prospective two-deep, and admitting that it's way early to tell exactly what we have, this really does look like a Top 10 roster.

Very deep with proven contributors at most positions thanks to those portal additions, with a fairly small number of spots you could call holes.

We need Brennan ready to play at the level he played in the Missouri game in 2020 right away, and to be able to build on that as the season goes along. If we get that, then yes - a 10-win season or better are very possible if things fall right.

I mean, I really hope you’re right. I think our remaining roster holes are still a pretty large hindrance though. LB, CB, and TE are still in the red to me. CB has improved with JBC added, but we still need bodies. TE is barren. LB could get a significant lift from HP’s commitment, but we lack proven depths there as wel.

If you’re not saying 15-0, you’re not a real fan.

I feel safe saying 9 is a possibility now. Depends on how we play at QB but we have a staff now that actually develops players across the board. Coach Steve E. did everything he could and I thank him for his time here. I think we could have done even worse without CSE.

There is no doubt we need to add an SEC starting-quality tight end in the portal, and the availability of one is prospective at this point. The quality of what has gone in so far has been pretty weak on the whole.

But you've got to think that every tight end that enters at this point has to have LSU on his short list. There really isn't a better opportunity in the country for a good tight end than what's at LSU right now, and this staff has already demonstrated they're pretty effective in communicating how good the opportunities are for transfers in the portal.

Bernard-Converse fixes us up at cornerback about as well as we can be fixed up under the circumstances, though the rule is you need 5 corners who can play to get through a season with injuries and so on. Jones has to step up and Welch needs to be an early contributor. But this Davis-Robinson kid they found really does look like he could help in a pinch. I think he's much further along than McGhee. I would say we aren't quite deep enough at corner, though between Ryan, Ward and Burns you do have some safety valve options. And the three starting corners are very serviceable if not very good. They're all veterans with histories of making plays.

That leaves linebacker, where you could say we have a hole. The good news is Baskerville coming back means we have a star player there. We need one more guy to emerge at minimum as a stud, and then one or two others who can be serviceable rotation guys to fill the 3rd LB spot and spell the main two. Nobody is really proven there, and your overall numbers aren't fantastic. That said, you do have enough candidates that finding two or three quality guys to go with Baskerville is realistic. They thought Jared Small was the best LB on the team going into last year; he's back. Mike Jones started at Clemson and had his moments last year; it's not unrealistic that he could pop like Duke Riley or Damone Clark this year. West Weeks was pretty good as a freshman at UVA; they recruited him to come in and help right away. Perkins and Tolan are pretty damn good high school LB prospects and it should surprise nobody if one or both pops right away. Even Josh White is a kid they've talked up in the rare moments when he's been healthy.

With the exception of tight end, we're at least competitive at the positions where you could say we have holes. That would include center, given all the kids who could move there. Compared to a lot of other teams that puts us in pretty good shape.

By any metric, there are three teams in our own conference (and 2 in our division) that have more talent than we do. The gap of talent between us and Alabama is as large as it has ever been. The same applies for Georgia. We are closer in talent to A&M, but there is no doubt, with this last class, they have more.

Now regardless of that, we are still going to curb stomp them in College Station come November.
