re: LSU has entirely revamped their defense in the portal

Was you expecting LSU to just pluck elite defensive starters from Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, Alabama, Notre Dame or Georgia? LMAO
You can’t expect guys the caliber of what these teams have to be all up in the portal. One because they start for championship caliber teams and secondly I’m sure they get paid handsomely.

Well shite I guess get ready for another 4-5 loss season. The portal will prove to be useless if LSU can’t make anything happen with the players they got this year.
But then again you aren’t ever hardly going to see elite players from championship level teams in the portal. And that’s what you have to have to be able to compete for championships.

The question is how long it takes for this group to play as a unit.
While we expect them to get better as the season progresses under the new playoff format and good coaching, we can’t suffer too many losses while they learn.
Is this a concern?

I think the DL getting pushed around has more to do with Strength and Conditioning than any DL coach. They lose stamina and get pushed around late in games. Maybe it's time for a new Strength and Conditioning coach

GREAT mix of talent - returners, transfers & inbound FR - in the DEF room that our staff can coach & develop into a CFP squad. We might just be able to say we have a dog or two at each level this season (DL, LB, DB).
Gotta come ready to play game 1 vs CU.

Huh. Where did I allude to that ?
LSU did their best with what was available. Surely there is some room for some opinions other than this will be a top 10 defense now.
Y’all really like to suck down these rankings with no regard. They are pointless

Agreed. We were a very weak team physically last year. At all levels, some of that contributed to the poor tackling. And we got our shite pushed in on both side of the line, even with most of the OL being upperclassmen. Including by Texas 8&4 players under our former S&C coach.
The current staff isn’t getting it done.

This portal class paired with the 25 class and some talented underclassmen has all the ingredients for a top 15 defense. The depth and talent is absolutely there

Not worried about the DT play under Bo Davis

s it a top 15 defense, it’s way too early to say. This defense can be between 20-30, which should be great if the offense can find a run game.
Finding a run game is entirely on the OL opening up holes. This one of the more talented rb rooms in the country

adding depth is great but i cant say any of these guys are really all that exciting
Fans like you are just determined to be miserable and not get excited about anything good lord

Cooley is limited physically. Looks smaller and not very fast.
Cooley ran a 4.49 out of HS so false

Pickett is the only cover guy and he’s young
Mansoor delane can absolutely cover and Jackson was a top 30 player out of HS he has a high ceiling just needs to be coached up. Pj woodland also demonstrated sticky coverage as a true freshmen just need to put on weight. We also have the no.1 cb out of Louisiana coming in who is a dog in coverage in Aidan Anding he will be a stud for us .
Your mansoor take is flat out outlandish he looked just fine athletically against an explosive Miami wr room. Some fans are just determined to be negative your trying to hard to nitpick. The cb room is objectively deeper and more talented next year

You think every player is going to be an all American. That doesn’t make me miserable if I disagree

I don't like agreeing with Lester but I don't think he's crazy. Those are their portal rankings. That's not where they rank overall. They are solid P4 starters; not All Americans. Last year's defense was ranked 61st in yards per game and 88th in yards per play. They are going to be better. But I still don't think they have the horses up front to be elite. Hope they prove me wrong.

Potential and actual are two different things, and recent history has shown portal players don't automatically come in and buy in.

This would seriously contest that:

Vandy picked on him this year. Go look at the tape. So how's he going to hold up covering against 7 better SEC teams than Vandy this year etc?

Maybe, but he's small too. I wouldn't count on production right away

I'm being objective while viewing things through a lens of LSU being a contender in the Playoff.
We need to keep in mind that our secondary has not been very good since 2019, and that's 5 years full of 5-stars and 4-stars back there. To all of the sudden get excited about freshmen and portal players that would normally never see the field at DBU at its best, that seems like the typical sunshine pumping outlook most fans resort to

Do you ever say anything positive? Ever? Or is this just how you are?
Posted on 1/14/25 at 11:50 am to Phillytiger9
If Woodland adds some weight he will be a key contributer
Posted on 1/14/25 at 11:55 am to Phillytiger9
Looks really good on paper. We need the majority of those guys to work out. The portal can be hit/miss when guys move from system to system, and especially when they move levels of competition.
I'm excited to see what Baker does with some decent talent.

All of those guys are moving on due to underachieving. So lsu needs to not only unlock their talent but also form a cohesive defensive unit. Some will hit but a lot won’t
