You’re thinking of this all wrong. Everything comes down to future recruiting.

And this won't make a difference AT ALL.

Did recruiting suffer and/or benefit from LSU's response or lack thereof to the Alton Sterling incident? That event garnered national attention and it happened in the city where LSU is located. It was a topic of conversation for several months in 2016 and, again, in 2017 with the trial. During that time LSU signed two top 10 classes. Point being, this gesture won't make a BIT of difference in recruiting.

Now, it probably won't make a bit of difference either in fan interest, etc. But it seems to set forth an unnecessary precedent. Is LSU supposed to "honor" anyone who is killed? Or just people the most vocal among us think are important? Is Floyd's life more noteworthy or valuable than the 60-70 people murdered in BR each year? Do they deserve to be honored as well? If not, why? Do only black people killed by police get this distinction while the several others who are murdered city/state/nationwide don't?

The reality is LSU found themselves in a box because, for whatever reason, they feel it necessary to comment/make virtue signaling gestures with respect to newsworthy matters that have NOTHING TO DO WITH LSU. What put them in the box was lighting the stadium blue in April in honor of the BRPD officer killed in the line of duty. They couldn't do that and then NOT honor someone on the other side of that spectrum...a man killed by a police officer. Once you decide to get into the unnecessary virtue signaling business you can't pick sides. You have to virtue signal for all. There is some portion of the population that think honoring the fallen office is a great gesture. However, there is another segment that doesn't think so. And vice-versa for Floyd.

How about just staying out of the virtue signaling business all together?

He had been to prison 5 times, one including armed robbery of a pregnant woman in her own home. it's something that shouldn't be glazed over.

His death was a tragic instance which will end in deserved justice for those involved, but the martyrdom of floyd is excessive given his recent past

Floyd didn't deserve to die but he was otherwise a piece of shite. Ridiculous.

It's not really martyrdom as much as it a symbol for a much larger problem in America.

But did we all rob a pregnant woman at gunpoint?

Add to that Floyd pointed the gun at her fetus. He was a disgusting human being.

Having said that, there are people who are wronged by the police, and the police need to change. Put "no knock" warrants on the the top of the list of things that need to be removed

The problem extends way past police brutality.

They did it this past April too. Which I can guarantee you why they felt compelled to do it for Floyd. Had they not there would have been accusations of LSU "picking sides". That is, honoring an officer killed in the line of duty but not honoring a person killed by an officer.

The only common theme is that neither really had any close affiliation with LSU and it seemed to be an unnecessary gesture on both instances. But once you do it for one, you can't not do it for the other. Which circles back to the broader question: Why does LSU need to be in the virtue signaling business in the first place?

Neither does owning a business deserve getting beaten by a 2 x 4.
When are we going to honor those who gave their lives

I've been an LSU fan since I was 5 yrs old, but learning how many LSU fans are POS racists has really made me wonder why I continue to support the school. Just go to the Politics board here and wander thru the celebration of ignorance sponsored there and you realize how entrenched these views are . Trump has made overt racism fashionable again, so it is much more noticeable now.
It also makes me wonder why black kids should want to attend here. At least the coaching staffs let it be known that they understand some of these issues
