I was looking around trying to get a sense of the LSU Men's basketball ranking after a "tough" win over the weekend.

According to NCAA Men's Basketball Net Rankings, LSU dropped from #81 to #82. Let's face it, the schedule has not been a tough one so far, but a 10-1 record is respectable for a new coach with a load of new faces.

Should this team be getting more or even less respect at this point?

Check their strength of schedule number, then check their ranking. Ask yourself the question again.

I eluded to both, so there is that. I just wanted to see what others that may be closer to the team thought about it at this point.

The schedule has been a total joke, cant take the record with any seriousness. Which is why we are so low in rankings like torvik, NET and kenpom - they all see us for who we are, a below par power conference team who cant put away a lot of bad teams.

If we dont improve a ton these tight victories over bad teams will turn into a lot of drubbings coming up in SEC play.

The 1 bright spot is we at least turned up to play KSU and WF, so we have to hope we were just playing down to a lot of bad opponents outside of those games.

I like this addition in your edit. I agree that some teams play up or down to their competition and LSU has had a couple of tests in KSU and Wake that may point to it.

However, your last line before edit may be the more realistic of the two:

If we don't improve a ton, these tight victories over bad teams will turn into a lot of drubbings coming up in SEC play.

Weak schedule. .500 in SEC Play would be a great season!

Yeah, I just don’t think we can tell anything yet until we are consistently playing better competition. Plus he’s still feeling out lineup combinations.

If we wanted to we could feed KJ every other play against these weaker opponents. We have just been trying to give real experience to different players while KJ defers early on. In the second half the team just imposes its dominance. No panic in the team.

When we play Arkansas I expect we will be feeding KJ early and often.

We were picked 9th or 10Th in the SEC this season.

Clearly, so far the three best SEC teams are (in no order) Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee. Auburn and UK are also very talented teams. The rest of the lot have deficiencies.

Before the k state loss we were kenpom #40

Last time I checked we are around 75 on kenpom. A 35 spot increase from all wins. That should tell you and anyone just how bad we have looked in these victories.

The home non-conference average win margin is at 10.5 pts, and that's with a 29 point victory against UNO. Without that game it drops to just 7.5 points.

Obviously teams are allowed to get better, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit worried about SEC play.

Fair statement(s).

I am looking forward to Arkansas and Kentucky in the coming weeks. I am cautiously optimistic with what this LSU team could become with confidence built through playing well against a couple of good teams early in SEC play.

A win or two would be monumental.

Our OOC was pathetic.

We are 0-1 in Q1, 1-0 in Q2, 1-0 in Q3. That fact that we've played basically two teams with a pulse is sad.

meanwhile UNC is 1-4 in Q1 and 3-0 in Q2, and ranked 25th.
Losing 4 Q1 games is better than winning 8 Q4 games.

Ohio State is 0-3 in Q1, and 2-0 in Q2, ranked 26th.

I'd say they get an appropriate amount of respect. Like you said, a weak schedule to date, but only 1 loss. Basically all new faces and an entirely new coaching staff (minus Tasmin), thus a lot to prove. The SEC is stacked this year, so if the team deserves more respect, they will earn it.

Schedule is awful. All it indicates is that this team might be able hang with mediocre teams. Good teams should have no issue with us. Considering where we were after Wade was fired, that is better than expected.

Winning by 8-10 points against weak opponents isn’t inspiring. The back bone of this team seems to have been soaked in vinegar.

Well, yeah. I don't think anyone is saying they're inspired by our results to date. But as others have said, we're still kind of tinkering with lineups and minutes and figuring out who everyone is and only have 1 loss, which was one of the flukiest ends to a game I've ever seen. It will all work itself out in SEC play, one way or the other.
