Watched the tigers for the first time last night. I saw a few flashes of good play, but mostly what I saw is a small team getting out-rebounded by a larger team leading to a lot of garbage points i.e. offensive rebounds off of bad shots leading to easy layups. I understand that LSU is a work in progress, and that the season is young, but I don't see us consistently beating good competition night in and night out. There is no way we will have the rebounding edge in the SEC like we had last night. We also are questionable in the post with string-bean Chris Johnson and out-of-position Tasmin Mitchell. The combined record of the teams we've played thus far is 13-31 with most of those 13 wins coming against directional schools. We might have the worst strength of schedule in the NCAA. I hope we're not depending on an RPI to get us in the tournament at the end of the year, b/c we're gonna be screwed in that department. The SEC West is extremely weak this year, so hopefully we can finish 1st or 2nd and get a bid that way.

P.S. What little talent we have on this team is graduating this year. LSU basketball is gonna get worst before it gets better, esp. considering that we have few playmakers coming in for the recruiting class next year. I hope this Dotson kid can really play.

I agree with what you say, but then I think back to last few seasons, and think, we are bigger than a team like Cal State and we still lose to them by 12 points. That happened alot.

Now, we are actually moving towards maximizing the talent we do have. Even if we aren't "great", we still look more like a basketball team with an excellent upside, this season and the seasons to come. Not so sure that was the case in the past.

Well, they hussle more on defense than any LSU team I have ever seen. I can live with that for right now.

Naa...play A&M, Utah on the road, Washington State, and Xavier will help us out a little bit.

FYI, I wouldn't make to many assumptions about this team after watching only one game. It should be noted this same CSF team outrebounded an undefeated #15 Wake Forest team and took them to the wire. Right now, I'd avoid getting either too high or low on this team.

Right, it'll help a little bit. But teams that play in these preseason tourneys play 2-3 teams like Duke, Texas, Michigan St., Tennesee, G-town, Gonzaga in one weekend. We play A&M, Utah, Wash St, and Xavier in our WHOLE season. Our out of conference schedule is HORRIBLE. I am of the thinking that playing bottom-of-the-barrel teams does not prepare us at all for better competition. I think we're going to get beat badly when we play A&M mainly b/c we won't have any experience against solid competition. It's gonna take several games against good competition just to get adjusted to the step up in the level of play.

but those are established programs of the last few years...you can't really expect that right now. Those are national programs. We aren't as of right now. Unrealistic to think those schools would want to schedule us or those tournys invite us right now.

I've had the chance to watch A&M play and this game is a very winnable for LSU.

personally, i thought we played very sloppy last night...19 turnovers = not good...i was happy we played good D & sealed the victory very easily but last night was NOT our best game of the year performance wise

I understand the reasons behind us not playing in those tourneys, but at the end of the year, we're still gonna be behind the eight ball b/c of our weak OOC schedule compared to the teams that play stiffer competition in the early season.

fwiw that's the whole SEC this year. We'll never play a schedule like Duke, UNC, even the Zags.

And that's the chance a team like LSU must take at this stage. Play a murderous row schedule and destroy the confidence and chemistry and wind up like last year or...

Win some games, try to get your feet on the ground by learning some fundamentals, and at the end of the season, actually being considered.

For this year, this schedule is exactly what this team needs.

I hope you're right Stro. I've enjoyed your analyses in the past few years. You've always presented an objective viewpoint, and if you say it's winnable, I'll believe that it's true. I just wonder how this team will handle a step up in competition after playing such patsies.

Compared to how lost we looked with Brady here...I am embracing what we have done thus far. 6 wins, 0 losses...that is as good as we can be right now on paper, and that's what matters.

We had alot of turnovers, but I noticed it was when we tried to run. Trent is letting them show what they can do. Maybe that is a limit for them. They can only run so much before it gets sloppy. But it's nice to find out now, because come SEC play, Trent will remember that and make sure we play a little bit slower tempo.

I have faith in Coach Johnson. he preaches defense and rebounding, and that's what wins games. I don't care what we look like right now as long as it improves, and it is. We are a work in progress, and anyone who follows the team knows that. But this first season, he is coaching what he inherited, and he is coaching it well. I'm sure coach will try things while he can, against weaker opponents.

Also, last night we were short two players, if it means anything. Still...I like what I see in this team. They look confident and capable.

you can't deny their defense has looked hell good so far this year. granted CSFU was the best team they played and they aren't great but they were a step up. hell, they lost to the 16th ranked team in the nation by something like 7 points. then again, they lost to some shitty teams.
