And, BTW, I suspect you meant "statistic", not "data point" (a "data point" can't be used for statistical analysis and reasoning; one needs a statistically relevant sample size of data points for analysis and reasoning).

In my scrimmage summaries, I added sacb and sacf. Is there anything else i could add that would be helpful? I'm considering HR off which pitcher, assists vs chances, etc.

These would be really cool. Have you ever tried using an official scorebook instead of just notes? I know that may mean slightly more dedication if you have little ones running around.

Thanks for designating which SACs are bunts and which are flies. That's a big help.

I do not want to add any additional work on you but in a perfect world it would be nice to know who is catching for every caught stealing and stolen base. That way we can generate some defensive numbers for the catchers other than just accounting for throwing errors.

We can approximate the CS & SB defensive numbers from what you're already doing but I know Johnson juggles/substitutes the catchers during a scrimmage so who was catching exactly when a CS or SB occurs is not definitively determinable in your current box scores.

And, again, in a perfect world, if we want to get an estimate of each pitcher's "BABIP against" stat, if you do start counting which pitcher gives up a home run, we would also need to know which pitcher gives up a SAC fly. SAC bunts don't matter in computing the BABIP but SAC flies are a part of the formula. Of course, since we now know the BABIP is a "meaningless" statistic according to the baseball experts on this board, we could just ignore the SAC flies surrendered by which pitcher if it's a burden on you to chart it.

You are now welcome to tell me to go F myself if you want to and I'll see myself to the door...

PS- Thanks, Josh.

I keep a minimal scorecard in my notebook but don't attempt to list every play in my summaries. When a poster asks a question about a certain play I can refer to my scorecard to try to answer it. I don't lack information but just don't report all of it. I don't track pitch count when a play occurs, too little room on my sheet, nor a pitcher's pitch count (they don't put that info on the scoreboard during scrimmages) and that is too much for me to keep track of.
I wish we had a poster who would do a play by play (BPB) for all scrimmages. That would require someone who's schedule and dedication allows for that. I also wish i could find a younger person, with better eyes, to train as a future replacement for myself. I know that someone on the staff keeps a record of all scrimmages. Perhaps someone could get access to these and post them on line.

I called Jamie Tutko last Spring and asked if I could get stats from the scrimmages and he was polite but quick to respond that Coach Johnson told all players and assistant coaches that he doesn't want the release of any "official stats" from scrimmages so as not to provide scouting material to upcoming early season opponents.

It's sort of like Coach Johnson's answer Monday night at the meeting when he was asked who would be this weekend's starting rotation and starting lineup and he replied, "Crews is likely to start in the outfield. That's a safe bet. That's all I want to disclose until I have to disclose it before the weekend."

Coach Johnson probably doesn't like that we put out the information we already are prevy to. If we get too good at this, he may close the scrimmages.
I'll try to incorporate your suggestions in my summaries this fall. I'm going to need a bigger notebook.
