Danny Etling was a good quarterback.

Interceptions were a concern going into the season and it turned out to be valid.

Given the amount of attempts he had 490 (3rd in the nation), his 11 INTs weren't that outrageous. The only two players with more passing attempts each had 12 interceptions. You also had veteran SEC QBs like Beck and Milroe (both potential playoff QB) who had more (Beck - 12) or almost as many (Milroe - 10)

Nuss wasn't perfect by any means, but Sloan did him no favors with a non existent running game and a passing approach that forced the QB to execute a lot of high degree of difficulty throws.

I was not doing that at all. Simply pointing out obvious things that worked against him at points this season. Its not a secret the run game was mostly non existent this year, its also not a secret once Dellinger went down the OLine play took a huge nose dive when you had Mubenga alongside a struggling Chester as well. These are things we need to get fixed moving forward. Nuss has his own things to work on like deep(er) balls and not trying to make everything happen that isn't there at times. Nuss gives us a great foundation for next year though as we've seen some massive leaps from previous QBs in year 2 starting here, and he had a really solid year overall this one.

It’s easy to complete 63% of your throws when you’re throwing 10 yards parallel to the LOS to gain 6 yards on 3rd & 23.

Nuss had one of the lower screen rates in the conference this year at 14.9%. There were QBs in the 26-30% range like Beck and Ewers.

His adjusted completion was 71%, which for a guy who didnt throw many screens is very solid.

This is actually a solid season for a first year starter. Moreover, JJ was caught right in the middle of Les's lurch towards the infamous pound-n-punt offense. We were blaming JJ and Crowton for the terrible offense but the real blame belonged to Les.

He did have two starts in 2008, but the fact people continue to lump Jefferson in with Jennings and Harris is ridiculous. He was a more accomplished passer and a much more accomplished rusher.

Also include that most of Garrett's 11 INT's came during the 3 game skid where he played (and the rest of the team) as bad as I've seen a QB play.

Burrow did have a 4 game stretch in 2018 where he had 0 TDs and 4 INTs (Bama, State, UGA and UF).
Bama was a 29-0 loss. State was a 19-3 win. UGA was not great passing, but JB had a big TD run. UF was a loss sealed by a JB pick 6.

Also add in JD played like absolute dogshit against Arkansas, Auburn, A&M and Tennessee. Handing A&M and Tennessee victories.

First year starting QB at LSU (4th year for JD)

Joe Burrow - 2894 yards 16 TDs 5 INTs
Jayden Daniels - 2913 yards -17 TDs 3 INTs
Garret Nussmeier - 3735 yards - 26 TDs 11
INTs

And the winner is Nussmeier on best 1st season as a starter at LSU 4th total for JD.

It’s so funny watching posters scramble to discredit Nuss season when the numbers show he had a great year for a first year starter especially with an SEC schedule a first year OC. Not to mention the worst supporting cast of all the QBs mentioned.

Agree and everyone hates the turnovers but that’s properly contextualized within the passer rating and his INT numbers are very comparable to guys like Rohan, Mauck and Flynn who were never bashed for them the way Nuss is so there’s definitely a degree of bias there.

Burrow against ranked teams in 2018

Miami 11/24 140 yards 0 TDs 0 INTs
Auburn 15/34 249 yards 1 TD 0 INTs
Florida 19/34 192 yards 0 TDs 2 INTs
UGA 15/30 200 yards, 0 TDs 0 INTs
State 16/28 129 yards 0 TDs 1 INT
Alabama 18/35 195 yards 0 TD 1 INT
Texas A&M 25/38 270 yards 3 TDs 0 INT
UCF 21/34 394 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT

Burrow wasn't lighting the world on fire against ranked teams or anyone else until the A&M game the last game of the season But he did have a solid running game and really good defense behind him.

JB also added 249 rushing yards and 5 rushing TDs against those same ranked teams.

Before 1st starting season Nuss did have a lot more experience playing college football with all of it being at LSU than Burrow had when he transferred to LSU the summer before his first starting season.

In 2018 Burrow also played within the limitations of a very Les like and predictable offense, and he also just had the summer before the season to get familiar with the offense, teammates, coaching staff, and LSU & area in general.

In 2024 Nuss had already been at LSU for 3 seasons including 2 seasons with Kelly, Sloan, and other current coaches and with many players for multiple seasons including spring practices and off season workouts. He had the starting job from before bowl game after 2023 regular season thru the following spring practice and summer to work exclusively as the starting QB for the upcoming 2024 season.

Before 2018 Burrow had 39 attempted passes for 287 yards in 3 seasons at Ohio State with all being during late mop up duty in 9 games across 2 seasons (didn’t have a pass his true freshman season and don’t think he ever played that year).

Before 2024 Nuss had 219 attempted passes for 1,720 yards in 18 games across 3 seasons of actual game experience including significant playing time in SEC championship & in the bowl game after that 2022 season, the start in bowl game after 2023 season, most of 4th quarter against Auburn in 2022, most of 4th quarter against Bama in 2023, and even during his true freshman season in 2021 played most of the game against a ranked Ark team after entering in the first quarter and played against a ranked Ole Miss team for most of the 4th quarter. Nuss had more attempts and yards during his 2021 true freshman season alone than JB had during his entire 3 season career at Ohio State before transferring to LSU.

I like Nuss and think he can improve, but any comparison to JB’s first season especially if trying to be predictive of improvement in season 2 as a starter has to look at more than just first starting season stats.

2003 Mauck passer rating - 148.2

2007 Flynn passer rating - 125.8

2024 Nuss passer rating 140.7
