GAME SUMMARY

quote:

For the second time in four years, the Bengal Tigers presented coach Charles McClendon with a perfect Cotton Bowl game. Unranked LSU (7-3-0) sprang one of the Classic’s biggest upsets, downing No. 2 Arkansas, 14-7, and ended college football’s longest winning streak at 22. The Hogs (10-0-0) last defeat came by the same score, on the same Cotton Bowl turf, to SMU in the ninth game of 1963. That also was the last time the Hogs had been blanked in the final two quarters until the Bengals turned the trick today. Arkansas had not beaten LSU since 1929, and in the 1947 Classic the two teams battled to a scoreless tie. But, things were different now. The Razorbacks were the heavy favorites, and the unexpected happened. Prone to turnovers and injuries throughout the season, LSU did not yield a fumble or an interception to the Hogs while quarterback Pat Screen handled the mixture of short passing and the inside power game to perfection. But it didn’t start out that way. On its second possession, Arkansas rolled 87 yards on 11 brilliantly executed plays en route to its only score. Harry Jones dazzled the Tigers with power sweeps and Bobby Burnett pounded the middle. Quarterback Jon Brittenum was in total control, and whipped a 19-yard aerial to Bobby Crockett for the touchdown. The drive consumed just 1:27 and the Razorbacks were on the scoreboard, 7-0.

Weve ruined their dream season plenty of times... Has me thinking what wouldve happened if they beat us in 2011? If #3 Ark beat #1 LSU but lost to #2 Alabama who lost to #1 LSU how would that all have shaken out in the SECw and NC game

sorry for the hijack

Obviously Bama would just be given the National title. How is this even a question?

We lived in Ft Worth at the time and my Dad was very active with the alumni association.I met Coach Mac before the game. It was quite a thrill for a 10 year old Tiger fan to be in the stands. There were some disappointed Hog fans after the 7 & 3 Tigers snapped their winning streak.. We didn't hear any LSwho remarks after denying them a national championship. Top of my favorite sports moments.

I was a Marine in Vietnam and placed a $100 bet with a buddy from Arkansas. I wrote Coach McClendon and told him the boys from Louisiana were pulling hard for the Tigers. He wrote back and told me to come by his office when I returned from Nam. I did just that the next Spring with my beautiful new bride at my side. We had a good visit and he gave us a pair of tickets. Fifty plus years go fast boys, but good Tiger memories last forever.

Legend has it he described the game - on national tv - as the best game since Lockport beat Larose.

Alabama would have been awarded the 2011 National Title and retroactively been awarded titles for 1924, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1962, 1973 and 1642.

I was 9 years old and this is the first game that I could tell you that I was at and who LSU was playing.
I'm pretty sure the first game I attended was a home game in 1962 because I remember seeing Jerry Stovall in the huddle and thinking how much taller he was than the other guys.

I was a freshman at LSU at the time home on holiday break(in those days you had to go back AFTER the break to take your finals!!!). We listened to the game at a camp in my hometown of Crowley. Our hometown QB Nelson Stokley only played a little in that game because of his knee problem(and he hurt it again in that game and had to come out) but he played enough to help affect the outcome. It is, to this day, one of the truly amazing victories that LSU ever had because they were on a 22 game win streak and we were 7-3 during the season. It was labeled the biggest mis-match in bowl history!

I was visiting relatives in Tennessee when the Cotton Bowl pairings were announced. The Vols fans shite a brick - they had assumed the #7 UT team would get the Cotton Bowl bid. One newspaper sportswriter predicted Arkansas would beat LSU by at least 40 points.

McCormick and Labruzzo both died very young; McCormick at 42 and Labruzzo at 34.

The performance of those two was one of the most impressiive I have ever seen, they were unstoppable that day.
